Hey there! I recently read a pretty interesting thread posted by jackbremer. It was wierd because he described a problem I've been having for quite some time now in exactly the same way I would have described it. My music is saved in D:\My Music as well. I have Genres, like Rock, Soundtracks, Hip-Hop, Oldies, etc.. Then in each genre folder, it breaks down kinda wierd. I have "individual" mp3's, like 311 - Beautiful Disaster, then i'll have 2 full No Doubt albums in their own folders. They would be called No Doubt - Return of Saturn and No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom. Then i'd have a folder named Metallica, and in it would be all the albums in folders, like And Justice For All, St. Anger, Load, Reload, etc...
This system is getting difficult to port over to the iPod. I have about 50GB of MP3s, and they are mostly organized, but one thing that screws it all up is that while ripping, Windows Media Player 9 (which i enjoy and consider THE best music player), sometimes gave each track in an album it's own artist (esp. compilations and soundtracks). So my ARTISTS section on the iPod is just massive. I can't sort through anything. It takes forever to find what I want. I wish there was a way to add the folder feature. Now I know that one reason they have used the database feature is to prevent simply copying of MP3s from many computers (this would work against the RIAA, and they dont want that, especially with their new iTunes Music Store).
I like the iPod's ID3 tag system. Most MP3 players use it. Rio's new line, Creative's, and many others use it. I had an ARCHOS player for quite sometime. It used the regular file folder system, and was VERY easy to browse through. Of coarse, it was a clunky player and did not have the "cool" iPod does. Not at all. Before the ARCHOS i used to own a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3. I had the same problem, and it even forced me to return it! (I only had 20GB of music back then as well!) But now, the iPod is so #### cool, i just can't return it. I am willing to do some work. Is there more than just re-doing all of the ID3 tags? I need a good system.
I was wondering if anyone has tinkered with the firmware. If they can get a bare-bones version of Linux to run on the iPod, then surely they can do some firmware hex editing, etc... If anyone is good in this field of reverse-engineering, please let me know!
Also, I have found out that using playlists will help me in my quest to organize music as similar to my file system as possible with ID3s. It's just that i don't know how to implement the playlist factor. Should I make each album a playlist? It would be nice if someone knew how to REALLY use to playlists to work for me in this scenario.
If anyone knows any good programs that allow me to batch edit many many ID3s in accordance to my directory structure, please post a reply!
Thank you for your time! I love my iPod very much, and would love to navigate through it easily and efficiently!
