I didn't think it was possible. I did a search and didn't see any directly related things about this, so hopefully i'm not double posting. My friend just brought this up to me, so it might already be on here, so if it is, delete this post or what not, but check this out, thru reverse engineering, experimentation, and luck (they say), they managed to get linux kernel on the ipod. i dont wanna try it on my 3g 30gb, but was thinking of getting a 1g 5gb next year just a project ipod to hack .

Amusing, but I doubt you could do much interesting with the iPod's controls.

The reason for Linux on the iPod isn't for doing anything extra besides playing music, really. My understanding is so that they can make it play other formats, like OGG, FLAC, SHN, and the like. Therefore, the controls (or lack thereof) don't matter, as they're designed for music as it is.

They're working hard. If apple wasnt such a punk about everything the owned and actually released some info, then i could see this project going further. I think it's a great accomplishment, even if it won't apply to the average user, it's a lot of work, and I can give credit to them , because the other hacks ive seen for the software havn't been to the degree as this. Another thing, they're trying to get firewire > ethernet networking, so then it'll have an IP address or something, i read that on their page.

Linux runs on just about anything that can compute something. I'm not surprised that they got Linux working on an Ipod, and I saw that info well before I got my ipod, but decided against using my ipod for linux since my PDA runs linux. For playing music, I'm happy with the ipod the way it is because I like the MP3 format, and not happy about WMA, or all the rest of them. Kinda old school I guess, I was happy when MP3 just came out as a new format, and I didn't have to have wave files on my computer to listen to music (which was a pain because my hard drive was about 2.5 gigs).
MP3 is good, I suppose others are good too, but I don't have a reason to change to any other format other than space (and my ipod has about 15 gigs left, and I'm well out of music to put on it)

I think running Unix is about of providing better music organization on iPod. Many people not satisfied with sorting order, having just one level of genre, no comment to see, limitation of notes and so on. Playing the other formats just the last thing I can think about. BTW somebody in this forum told that MP3/AAC decoding solved on IC level and can't be extended. Probably he was wrong.
