Get the tools for the iPod..

Open up the back... carefully unhook the audio ribbon connector from the logic board by wiggling the connector back and forth gently with your thumb and pointer finger.

Next, I believe you either need a torx t6 bit and a small philips screwdriver.

remove the screws and do everything backwards with the new headphone/remote jacks...

Is there somewhere to buy a replacement audio jack. My jack has been acting up, only giving audio to one ear at times when the headphone plug is turned one way. Is it a hard thing to do? If you could maybe a diy write up if you have done it anyone.

My advice would be to buy a replacement backplate off of ebay or a replacement headphone jack off of ebay for your specific model of iPod.

You have to explain what model iPod you have in order to help you, because for every model there's a different way the headphone jack is mounted.

I have a 3G 15GB ipod. What do you mean by backplate?

the backplate is the polished metal part that the headphone jack is mounted on...

Here's a picture from an ebay auction:

Would it be easier or better to use something like this instead of a used backplate?

Ummm, no, it wouldn't... because it'd be a lot more expensive buying that...

You can buy a used backplate and change out the little headphone jack (since you're going to have to do it anyways with that set)...

It'd be a lot cheaper just buying a replacement headphone jack off of ebay or get a backplate... whichever you can get cheaper, because any of them will do the trick.

That's what you want... way cheaper than iPodmods

Aight cool i think i might pick up one of those. How hard is it to change? Do I need to so solder anything? And do I realy need to buy one of those opener tools?

You'll need a really really small philips screwdriver to take out the three small screws... it's really easy to swap out...

I'd probably recommend some tools otherwise you might really damage the metal casing.

Hey DJ P,
How is the audio jack portion/top of ipod attached to the backplate? I am trying to decide weither to buy a backplate or just the top jack portion. I don't want to buy a used backplate and have it be all scratched and a mess because my backplate now is in good condition.

Just buy the headphone jack part... all you need is a small philips screwdriver (like one that comes in an eye glasses kit or something like that.

There are 3 screws holding it on and that's it.

Basically unhook the ribbon cable from the logic board (the ipod side, not the backplate side) and then find the 3 small philips screws. Remove the screws and the headphone jack should just pop right out.

Put the spare one back in and wallah, you're set to go.

i actually didn't fix mine because apple sent me a new refurbished one with the whole battery lawsuit deal, so now i have an extra backplate if anyone is looking.
