Just curious on how many people still have their very first ipod and have had flawless working order since purchase. Mind you, the software and connection issues are different. Im talking about JUST the ipod

I have never had any problem with my iPod, other than forgetting to charge it. I have a 2G 10gb and sync with my G4 mac. I've used iTunes since it came out several years ago and synching has always worked flawlessly.

that's nice to hear. Maybe its just me but the 3G seem more prone to problems than other ipods?

My original 5GB is still going strong. Small portion of the earphone jack has broken off, but it doesn't affect performance.
Still getting 8 hours out of the battery - more than happy.

im thinking i should invest in a 2g ipod maybe? im definietely in the market for one now that my ipod broke, and i heard the older ones sound better. Plus they are cheaper and ultimately i want more storage

Get a 2G for now. When the 4G comes out, decide if you want to upgrade then.

I don't know if its that 3G really has more problems or if there are just more people with them here on these boards.

The 3G battery life is an obvious problem though.

I have a 3G 30 gig iPod and I've never had any problems at all. It has worked flawlessly from the first day and I've had it over six months now. My battery life is fine, too - I average about seven hours and that's more than enough for me.

Hi, I had my new 40gb iPod at the start of the November and had to send it to be repaired because of a hard disk problem. I got my replacement iPod last week but it won't connect to my computer. So support have said I should have my third iPod in a week or two. Hopefully third time lucky i'll have one that works. So far I have not been able to load a single song onto an iPod

that's a shame. I think if apple ends up sending me a brand new 10gb 3G im going to end up selling it on ebay and getting a 20GB 2G instead. They seem more reliable and they get better battery life and are a heck of a lot cheaper.

15GB 3rd gen - absolutely no problems till some dumb slag walking out of the music store without looking where she was going walked right into me and knocked my iPod off my clip. And here I thought I was being nice by holding the door open...

The iPod took a tumble and the hard drive is having some hardware problems; luckily I'm only 4 months into warranty so I sent it in to have it checked out.

Life without an iPod sucks...

Ive gone thru 4 replacement ipods since i bought my 3 Gen 15Gb ipod back in May 2003...i'm beginning to lose a lot of faith in this crappy item...I seriously recommend everyone to invest in the ipod applecare protection plan which was finally introduced.

My third iPod should arrive in about 6 days. It'll be the replacement of a replacement, that strangely enough had the same problem as my original. I'm hoping, like someone here said, third times the charm.

Looks like my iPod should arrive tomorrow from the repair centre. Over the phone, the guy said that they "replaced it with a new one" and I thought I'd wait to see if I get a 15GB or maybe something bigger back...

Here's to hoping...

Cheers.

I own a 3G 15 gig and I've had no problems. Even after dropping it on the pavement (luckily lovingly embraced by an iSkin case). Don't leave your ipod charging through your computer and allowing your computer to go to sleep... it drains all the power. Otherwise, the battery is fine. I use it as a transfer disk for other than music files and it's never failed me.

I have a 15 gig 3G pod and was a bet skeptical with some of the problems I had heard about before buying it. I've had it for four months now and have had no problems with connection or playback.

I doubt you will get a larger iPod back from service even though the 15GB is discontinued. Apple keeps a certain amount of these on hand for replacments. Heck, my buddy returned his 2G 10GB just this fall and recieved a brand new 2G 10GB iPod in return.

As for myself my 3G 30GB iPod just died last week. I was planning to back up my Graphic Design files when school was over fro Christmas break, but as I soon found out I waited too long. I learned a valuable lesson in the process though, back up the files on your iPod at least once a week. Losing a term's worth of electronic files hurt.

In case you were wondering how mine died it just decided to stop mounting. It charges via the firewire but never pops up so that I can access it as a hard drive or in iTunes.

Purchased a 3g, 30 gig iPod and I fell asleep with it hooked up to my computer and the 'Disk Keeper' came on and reformated my iPod HD and I got the dredded *folder/!*icon and had to send it back. On my new one I had that problem once but used the restore and I have never had any more problems with it nor any with iTunes. They both work great for me.

Well, I've had my 3G 20GB pod for almost two weeks...no problems yet. The only sucky thing is I have to go to friends houses to load songs because I have Windows 98. New comp soon....hopefully. I loaded 421 songs at a friends, then the next day I went to a different friends house and when I installed iTunes, I accidently "configured" it, so all of it got deleted. So now I only have 68 at the moment....:(

i've had my 3rd gen 10 gig ipod for about 4 months. No problems to spak of although I am unable to take the ipod off disk mode. Dont think I want to anyway but is it bad to leave it in disk mode all the time?

Nope! No problems. Does what it's supposed to, no freezes, no hiccups, runs nearly 10 hours onna charge. Yeah, I understand, no one believes that, but..... ya know, it does!

As usual, my 2 cents worth! ;-)

Soon to be the owner of a new G5 Mac!

3G 20GB
No Problems whatsoever.
I have had it for about three months, and have had no problems at all ever. I get about 9hours out of a charge.
The only time i ever had an.. issue was when i copied the whole directory structure to i:\iPod. Everything dissapeared from the iPod, and i had a brand new one to play with [no songs, nothing, but the software worked fine] I copied everything back to i:/ and it was back to normal. Now I know i can have 2 different iPods on the same iPod :) i just have to move some stuff around.

i have had my 3G 20 Gb iPod for several weeks now and i have had no problems with it - although i would be severly dissapointed if something had gone wrong with a brand new ?300 piece of kit!
