just got the shure E3c's. Have read here till my eyes bleed and finger tips are raw from typing.

At first, my impression was they are very clean but bass was not that good. I realized that the stock phones that came with my ipod were boomy and louder bass, but these are cleaner. Just doesnt seem as much volume on the bass.

I have done the ear tug thing, and tried the foamies, but the large grey tips seem to make a great seal. Feels like a vacuum on them

Still the bass isnt as loud or boomy as the stock phones, but definitely cleaner.

Will the sound improve as they "break in".

I got them at Circuit City, and can return if not happy.

I was thinking of the Sennheiser CX300's and getting them to compare, but cant see how they could be in the same league when half the price.

Again, the bass is very clean and perhaps what i notice is the lack of boominess that sometimes is confused as good bass response. I listen to a variety of music, and just find the sound so clean. Did get a chance to listen to the E5c's but I just cant see spending that much. I shoot photos and am saving up for a very expensive lens....

anyhow, is the breakin period for real. I read the foamies make the best seal, but I feel almost a suction with the large grey's

Any input or experience from someone else is appreciated...

i felt the same way when i got my shure e3

most say that iem's don't burn in, but instead, a period in which you get used to the new earphones, both fit and soundwise

the shure e3 have very little bass presence, but plenty of mids, giving them a dry, analytical feeling. what i did to get used to the new earphones is to listen exclusively to the shures...nothing else, not even speakers

It seems you bought the e3c looking to get boomy bass... If you've read a lot about them then you'd know that they don't offer that. You're better off with a a pair of sony ex71's.

Yes, try the CX300's. I like them more than the E3C which are known to be somewhat lacking in the bass or highs.

Or go for the EX90's, they are decent in the bass and have decent highs without being overly so.

I am not saying I like a boomy bass at all. I am just observing that to get the sound I liked best with more bass, I set the eq to R&B, and switching between the e3c's and stock buds it seemd the stock were louder with bass, but boomy. The e3c's were very clean bass but not as loud as i would like.

I really like how clean the sound it, but how do the CX300's sound compared to the e3c's. I just cant see how they can compete when less than half the cost. Are the CX300's that good? Is the bass clean but louder, and the sound still nice and clean overall. I suppose i can buy them and return the ones that dont suit my tastes.

After hundreds of concerts, many where my ears were ringing for a day, I doubt my poor ears are in the best shape...:o

the technology the shure uses is much different than the sennheiser

the shure is an armature, i think it was developed for hearing aids
while the cx300 uses a dynamic driver, much like regular earbuds and headphones

Well I ahven't tried the e3c but from what I hear it has more extended bass. If you like clean bass the e4c can prob offer you that. Give them a try and return them if they just aren't for you. I do a listen to a bit of rap&hip-hop myself and they seem to work pretty good. It's punchy and accurate.

I had an e2c and had problems with the whole line, i couldn't tell whether the drums were from the left or right side when it was supposed to be obvious. I got some 50$ ones from sony and those were better sadly, and then i got 100$ from westone and those were the ultimate; it was everything i was hoping for and more. So if you still have the warranty, i suggest you take those back.
