A method where someone could transfer their own image onto a case would be cool. Something like those t-shirt iron-ons.

In bb_dg's electric cow, only some areas glowed. Could this be achieved by painting a non-glow paint over certain areas?

If there was a machine that would stamp opaque paints onto finished cases, many different patterns could be made.

And there could be a special edition "do-it-yourself" kit for the adventurous!

but the problem with paint is would it be able to handle the stresses put on a case. ill be the first to admit that i know nothing about the products you use lajo, but from my experience with paint, i dont believe it would be able to handle all the stretching and punishment that your cases get

True for normal paint but there is a silicone paint, you apply it and then put the exo case into a preheated oven set at 200 degrees for 10 minutes and it comes out fused to the silicone and it becomes silicone just like the case. Someone put it nicely it is paint and bake .

I love the fire. Now you guys come up with a method to bring your designs to market. I think this will be the biggest thing that happened in the case market. Work on a structure for design/factory relationship to put out unique designs. Be creative and develop a style which is yours and you will develop a following. You are working with the right person here because I am on definitely on crazy side.

Sorry, I'm not good with photoshop, so I'll go old-fashioned.

I envision several awesome iPodlounge Xskn eXo cases:

1) Simple. Jack-O or Firefly color with large black Rounded-corner rectangle, on the back (in the portion with no air-holes)... Text inside the box, in White Text, "www.iPodlounge.com" and a Sub-text, in matching bright orange (smaller font) "All Things iPod"

2) This one is my favorite idea ;) Asphalt eXo 2, with iPodlounge logo on the back (The bright orange lounge chair w/ iPod), and WHITE text "www.iPodlounge.com" below the logo.

All text in iPodlounge logo font, of course.

Artistically, I disagree with putting an iPodlounge Logo OR text on the front. There simply isn't room. Besides, how practical is it to paint/bake on a 0.33 mm thick scrollwheel cover (not to mention still having it wheel work?)

Yes they are covered Lajo, but have you tested whether or not baked paint on superthin silicone impacts usability of the buttons and wheel?

Thanks for the compliments and yes, I will keep them coming. I've got about another 15-20 concepts sketched already. I too noticed the similarities to the covers on macskinz, but I promise you that I haven't been to that site in months. Have those fleeting images stuck in my brain?...I'm not going to argue that could be...but I've been trying to stay away from looking online at similar products for that very reason. The flame ideas was my first concept for lajo (I draw hot rod flames on everything)! That particular flame came from a contemporary religious illustration I did this past year (of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ). The 45 record adapter came from a t-shirt I have. The other symbols came from researching icons that have round characteristics (as an art director for an ad agency, we have volumes upon volumes of icons and themes to research from). Obviously the atom, biohazard and radiation all came from a science volume! The alien head I used from an illustration I did for a Bible study (alien in a foreign land theme). I am not saying that my ideas are all that original, but please know I do not deliberately steal ideas from similar products. I'm just brainstorming with Lajo to hopefully screen print some designs. I apologize for the similarities.

First of all, thank you stark23x for the exaggerated compliments! Really, I'm just trying to keep things simple and use images that appeal to me as a designer. I am just happy that you all like 'em! I love some of the other designs that are coming across the board too. The Pink Floyd case would rock and I love the camo and musical notes designs by bb_dg. I think a camo series would be killer.

Again, I am just glad you all like the cases I'm putting out there. I have a bunch of other sketches that I plan on getting to soon. I'll just keep plugging away with whatever I come up with. My wife just rolls her eyes when I say, "Hold on, I gotta write that idea down for an iPod case."

I would definitely go for stickers for the wheel. There are so many things you can put there. From the designs I've seen here, I would love to see stickers with the eye, the HAL light, biohazard, radiation, atom, sun and moon, trinity, speedometer, yin-yang, happy face, or the eight ball. A turntable with the pin on it would be awesome (especially since you could "scratch" on it.:D

And flames in the wheel, or an ipodlounge logo on the select button would be great, too.

I agree with wolfman about the stickers. That would be a great addition to lajo's lineup, and they are really cheap to make. (Shipping might be a problem for such a cheap item, though). Or maybe you buy a sheet that has 1 of each design for $5, and then shipping is $5, so you pay $10 total for a sheet of stickers shipped. Sound like a good deal?

Love the Rising Sun design, although I would make the sun fill the whole scroll wheel, not just the middle button.

I like the design ideas thrown around on this thread and am actually capable of printing them on our new product called "PodSkinz". The images can't be printed on the iPod itself but on a form fitting skin just like our MacSkinz product. The reason our digitally printed products are not available for production yet is because so far our system works great for prototyping but is too slow for production. This should be solved soon.

I really like the first one the best. Personally, I'd leave out the yellow symbol in the 2nd one.

*Edit: I didn't realize that the design on the first turntable skin showed the album being larger than the wheel. The portion that IS on the wheel is absolutely perfect! That's exactly what I would want on a sticker.

P.S. Would a company that might decide to produce these be able to print a sticker that looks like it has the texture of a vinyl record but still have a smooth feel.

I am glad you like the turntable design. That little yellow piece in the middle is actually an adapter to play 45 RPM records on a 33 RPM player. I used those as a kid on my record player (I also pretended they were throwing stars :))

The easiest way to make your image tranparent to show the iPod through it is to create your image on a separate layer in photoshop and then select the blending mode for that layer to "multiply". You will have nice depth of color and be able to see the iPod controls as well. Hope this helps!

First, save your photoshop file as a .gif or a .jpeg (or .jpg). Then, when you go to post your image, right below the box you type your message in, is the "Attach file" dialog box and a "Browse..." button. Click the "Browse..." button and find your file. When you submit your post, it should appear in the thread.

I know Lajo is working on some designs for silk screening his cases. He has been testing different methods of applying images. Keep checking his site...I think he will have something up soon!

they should make stickers that you can put over the screen just like on a cell phone so you can see the image at a certain angle and you can see the screen at a certain angle. they work something like that i'm not sure how.

Hey again,

I was wondering if you guys could help me out and give my your thoughts on my iPod case designs. What ones are your favorites? I am trying to come up with themes and designs that you guys will like. By getting feedback from you all, it will help in my concepting of future case artwork. Keep in mind that I try and design work that can be silkscreened in solid colors. That means blends and full color photographic images are not going to work (at least for now).

That is a great idea! Actually, I had a similar concept sketched out where it looks like the iPod has a large bullet hole where the scroll wheel is. I was visualizing there being a rough cracked and jagged edge and then have the internal parts of the iPod showing through the hole. What I need is a nice photo of the internal parts without the face on the iPod to get the true feel of what I want.

I'll see what I can find and I'll try and work on that. I think you should give it a shot too! I love seeing everone's take on what they would like to see their iPod look like.

I agree, to silkscreen some of these concepts may be tough, but I wouldn't say impossible. In fact, this could be a challenge for an artist to paint their own "one-of-a-kind" case. I am not skilled with an airbrush, but I do paint and love silk screened art (check out www.gigposters.com for some cool stuff). Personally, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised about what will be happening in the coming months. I think you are going to see a lot of artwork on iPod cases from all sorts of manufacturers...it's inevitable.

So, while some of our designs will never see the light of day...sometimes the concept is satisfying enough. Until then, my fingers are crossed and I'm gonna keep crankin' out ideas.

First of all, no idea is impossible! Yeah, maybe cutting out of cardboard is not the best idea, but instead of simply criticizing, why don't you offer a better solution? Have you ever masked a photo with amberlith? You can cut some pretty details images. Creating a small stencil for a barcode would not be that difficult if you are experienced. What are you offering this discussion by being nothing more than a pessimist? Creating a custom stencil for yourself and creating a one-of-a-kind case is not that crazy either. Sure, you can't mass produce them by hand-painting them, but I would have no problem working on a case just for myself.

Besides, the barcode image itself would not even be the problem with silk screening the case. The bigger problem is getting the case to be totally flat for the ink to cover evenly. But where there's a will there's a way.

I challenge you to not criticize unless you can offer a better option. Even better, why don't you offer us some designs that you would like to see on a case...what do you have in mind? I would be more than happy to help you with a look...oh wait...I already did with the Union Jack flag!

How about a stop sign? I know it sounds stupid, but i think it would look pretty cool. (thief grabs for ipod, reads the case for a second and thinks about it, thus giving you time to punch him in the face...stop sign skin saves sam's pod again........)

The "cardboard" wasn't a serious idea, it was the idea of a stencil that I was trying to suggest, and I definately wasn't trying to start a fight. Lets just get back to ideas of putting these designs on cases.
Maybe a stamp? For matrix just have 3-4 different stamps with different characters and colors of paint?

First of all, I apologize if my tone came off as angry...it was not meant to be :). As an artist and an art director over others, I try and always offer positive feedback...not straight critcism. That is all I meant. Your right, for the masses, stenciling and hand-painting is not the answer, but it just seemed like you only offered the down side of producing the designs...and nothing gets accomplished by that. Thank you for the compliments to my work...I really appreciate it and I only made the comment about the Union Jack case because I did that for you and out of the fun of creating these concepts for others...I didn't point out the difficulty in printing a full wrap around on a case. I'll admit that a lot mine probably won't see the light of day, but I realize that and don't need it pointed out to me...I'm just trying to enjoy the work :)!

Again, my tone came off angry and I apologize for that...I love this discussion group and EVERYONE I have come into contact with. I want to keep it that way and keep posting my designs...so I am sorry for our brief misunderstanding!

I am sorry that I gave off that impression...that is the last thing i had intended. I'll be the first to admit that I learn about design everyday and I am no expert by any means. I've enjoyed posting my artwork and viewing the art of others here. I just don't feel anything is impossible when it comes to design. I hear all the time that things "can't" be done, only to see them succeed. I apologize if you feel I am a know-it-all. I was just trying to share my experience and offer a hand to those who want help in their case designs. I surely did not mean to give off that attitude. Just one request. DON"T use the scroll wheel or other symetrical features that are a part of the iPod and skins to make the design. It bothers me that people have to be so centered. :D
