Don't run scandisk on your iPod. I had the same problem that you did several times and everytime I had to use the iPod updater to restore my iPod. After the last time I finally realized what was going on. I had left my iPod attached to the computer when it crashed and on startup scandisk ran and scanned not only my PC's harddrive, but also the iPod's harddrive. Apparently scandisk likes to rearrange files and that causes iTunes not to recognize your iPod.

So, the short version is that you're going to have to restore your iPod using the updater. Just make sure to unplug the iPod from your comptuer the next time the computer crashes.

Hmm...I don't know why the updater isn't recognizing it. When I had the same problem the computer would recognize the iPod, but iTunes wouldn't. Have you tried resetting the iPod (hold down select and either menu or play...I can't remember which), then reconnect it and see if that works.

Can you get it to boot into forced disk mode:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651

If you can get it to boot into that, the computer will hopefully recognise it and you should be able to do a restore with the iPod updater.

Your PC is sick.

I suggest doing Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore, and restore PC to when it was working b4.

Notice this will restore EVERYTHING to that date, so if u need anything saved...

No guarantee, just something to try.
