I have already looked for some info and I found that you can create a new playlist and then change the track order on the playlist (http://macs.about.com/od/itunes/a/itunes_tracks.htm)

However, what I want is to change the track order at my iPod's database. I don't want to create a playlist everytime I want to change the track order.

Could someone tell me how to change the iPod's track order without creating a new playlist? Is that actually possible?

This is driving me nuts since I have a lot of music on my iPod and if I can't manually order some tracks at iTunes then it is almost impossible to find them from my iPod.

Thanks a lot.

Monica

waaaa????

I dunn understand. How come u have to create a playlist just to change track ordering?

You are trying to change tracks ordering WHERE exactly? And when u do this, do u want to preserve the original ordering or not?

I'm trying to change the track ordering on the iTunes software. I don't want to preserve the original ordering.

- I transfer music to my iPod using iTunes
- iTunes automatically orders the tracks in a way that I don't like
- I want to change that track ordering that iTunes has automatically done
- I can't seem to change the track ordering

Thank you so much

so are you asking to change the track ordering of the entire library or a playlist?

If the library, then you have to click on one of the titles of which you'd like to order it by, the artist alphabetically, or the songs A-Z. Click the top titles to do this.

I want to change the track ordering at the library. But even when I click the top titles to change order, it changes the order, but not in the way I want.

I would like to be able to drag a song and drop it at the position I want, in the order I want. When I browse the library from my iPod, I go to Artist --> Albums --> and then the tracks are not in the order I want. How do I change that ordering?

thanks again,

Monica

iTunes automatically arranges the songs alphabetically or by the track number in the ID3 tag.

right-click on the track title in iTunes and choose "get info", then choose the Info tab and insert the track number you want.

How does this help? I dont want to change the track number because if that song is part of an album or something, it throws that album out of whack now. I want to just change the order of the playlist WITHIN THAT PLAYLIST ONLY and not change any song info to make it happen.

Quit screaming. The fix was for another user, and it works for her.

Your issue is different. If you want to change the order within a playlist, pick up the songs and move them. (This only works in a regular playlist, not a smart playlist.) You can't do it on the iPod, though; it has to be done in iTunes.

Um excuse me? Who's screaming? I was asking a simple question. Chill out. That's one big problem with text. How you read it is how you assume I meant it. Not the case. I wasn't screaming and wasn't freaking out, but was simply asking an extended question on what she was originally asking. The answer given would work, but it would also affect that song in any other place that it appeared in as well if the track number was of interest.

Besides I found the answer and though yours is also correct it also does not take into consideration what needs to happen before it will work. I found the answer and came back to provide it to anyone else that searches for the issue.

The problem that I had to get around was that two things had to happen before I could put the songs in any order that I wanted. 1) Shuffle songs has to be turned off, and 2) I had to click on the number header, since any other header selected would sort by that header. Until I did that I couldn't for the life of me to get those songs in any order that I wanted. ;-) It was dang frustrating since so many people were saying what you said but didn't add the "setup" part before it would work. My friend did the same thing when I asked him. He always sorts by track number but I did not. Anyway, there's the answer. But please know that i wasn't screaming nor did I mean to indicate that. Maybe I should have put quotes around "withing the playlist only" instead of caps. My bad.

Sometimes the order of the songs in iTunes are determined by fields titled 'Disc Number' and 'Album Artist'. I always make sure those fields are blank so that my iPod only looks at the 'Track Number' field. I hope this helps someone - because that was driving me crazy....
