I have a 4th generation 20GB clickwheel ipod with over 3000 songs and just about half the memory left. No problems, ever, until last night when I turned my PC on and my library and all my playlists were completely gone. The music still exists on my computer's hard drive, but I haven't had the chance to back up the library on the external hard drive that arrived in the mail this week.

So! How do I solve this? I'm most anxious to save all the music, of course, but would really love to preserve my playlists if possible, and the ratings would be nice, too. Can you help?

Thanks so much.

Are you sure you don't have something typed into the search bar in iTunes because that may be why it looks like there is no music.

Hi and welcome to iLounge.

Is it possible that you've logged in using a different user account or profile on your computer?

iTunes stores your music library in the current user's "My Music" folder (in Windows XP), so if you log on as a different user, or create a new user profile, this information won't be there, and iTunes will simply create a new database and start from scratch.

I would do a search through your hard drive for a file named "iTunes Library.itl", as this is your iTunes Library database itself. If this still exists, then you just need to copy it to your "My Music\iTunes" folder, and you should be good to go.

In the event that this file cannot be found, or has not been backed up, you have a couple of options...

The first is that if your music still exists on your local hard drive, you can simply re-import it into iTunes. You will not get back playlists, ratings, or playcounts, but at least your music will be back in iTunes and you can carry on.

On the other hand, if all of the music is intact and up to date on the iPod, there are a number of third party utilities that can be used to restore your music library from the iPod, including the metadata such as ratings, playcounts and playlists. If you need to go this route, I'd recommend checking out either CopyPod (http://www.copypod.net) (for Windows) or iPodRip (http://www.thelittleappfactory.com/application.php?app=iPodRip) (both Windows and Mac versions available).
