itunes and computer won't recognize ipod

i got a new computer and tried to connect my ipod to it. i have connected by ipod to multiple computers in the past and had no problems. however now itunes won't recongize my ipod. the computer recgonizes it as a drive (e) but says that the drive is empty. when i try to open the drive it freezes my computer until i disconnect the ipod. i've restarted the ipod numerous times, installed updates, re-installed itunes, and none of it has worked.

any suggestions?
