My computer burnt out and I now only have my music library on my iPod.

However, I cannot afford to buy a new computer at the moment, so I want to just transfer the songs on to my parent's hard drive for the time being.

My parent's computer does not have iTunes, nor will I be downloading it.

I just want to plug in my Ipod and see the music folders which I can copy to my parent's hard drive.

How can I do this?

There are a number of tools and other solutions that can recover the music from your iPod for you, ranging from accessing the iPod in disk mode and copying your music off directly (the files are stored on there in their original MP3/AAC formats) to using any number of software tools.

You can find a number of possible tools in our Software (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod-software/) section.

If you simply want to get all of the music back from your iPod onto your PC, you can actually just access your iPod in Disk Mode (ie, through a drive letter) and copy everything in the \iPod_Control\Music directory back to your hard drive and then reimport it into iTunes.

I'd also suggest checking out the thread How To Copy Songs From Your iPod to Your Hard Drive (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4719&highlight=copying+music+from+ipod) for instructions on how to do this and a number of other possible suggestions.

Thanks for the advice. I have been reading the thread you mentioned.

I guess my biggest problem at the moment is the fact that my iPod is not recognised as a drive letter. Could the age of the PC have any bearing on it? I think this PC is quite old and it has never had an iPod connected before.

The 'Install New Hardware' Wizard keeps popping up though, and asks me to insert a disc.

What version of Windows is on the PC that you're using?

The bottom line is that it seems as if Windows is not recognizing the iPod as a proper external storage device. You could try to download and install the iPod Updater software (available from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download.html) to see if that helps the computer recognize it.

Ultimately, as far as Windows is concerned, the iPod is just another external hard drive (specifically, a "USB Mass Storage Device"). However, if there are drivers missing in Windows itself that would prevent it from recognizing the iPod as such, then this would explain the problem you're having.

Ok, I am running Windows XP Professional.

There is no way I will be able to get this iPod recognised by this PC. So does that mean I have drivers missing from my PC? What does that mean? How can I rectify this problem? :shake:

Have you tried installing the iPod Updater yet?
