View Full Version : iPod shuts off when listening to Audible?

Hi--
I have a strange problem--
Every once in a while, when I begin listening to an Audible file on my iPod, my iPod will shut down (similar to if I were to press and hold the pause button). This doesn't happen all the time, and if it happens, it usually happens during the first minute or two of listening to the audible file.
When I start the iPod up again, it remembers exactly where it was in the audible file, so this isn't a huge problem, just sort of an annoyance.
Also, this doesn't happen with regular mp3 files--only audible files.
I'm not really expecting any fixes, but I was curious if anyone else noticed this. I've seen it through both firmware versions 2.01 and 2.1.

Yep, happens to me with MC9. I thought it might just be q problem with the software, so are you using it, or iTunes.

Bill--
Thanks for the reply.
I've used Audible Manager, ephPod, and iTunes to transfer audible files to my iPod. Doesn't appear that the problem is software related!

I saw precisely the same problem today. This was on my first go at Audible content on my iPod. I am using the latest firmware on my 20GB iPod.

I had this problem of shutting off after a couple of minutes, along with iPod not remembering the last book mark -- it would go back to the next-to-last book mark. Rather annoying to say the least. Finding one's place in an audio book when lost ranks up there with life's major bothers. It restarted audio play at the correct book mark when started up soon after stopping. Only an extended stop went back to the prior book mark. Also began showing Apple Logo when turned on after extended shut down. The last straw was that even after a full charge battery indicator showed only a small charge.
All this was solved with a reset. Hold down menu and play buttons simultaneously. If you did this correctly, you will see the Apple Logo and then your menu will pop up. Dunno why it took me so long to remember to do this. I bet a lot of problems would be fixed by reset. Now that I think about it, I had to reset frequently before updating iPod software. So...
Be sure to get the latest version of iPod software. It gives a much more readable battery indicator. May fix someother problems as well.
Off Topic, I am now happily subscribed to Audible as an "Ultimate Listner" thanks to this forum's alerting me. Pay $120 for 12 books and can buy at leisure and refresh whenever you use up your 12 books. I love having several books to choose from when I am away -- backstops being stuck with one you don't like too much. Just email them and they will change you over.

This is what appears in my account/my membership/switch my membership:
"You joined this plan on 11/06/2003
UltimateListener?. Get 12 audiobook credits per year. The audiobook credits can be used to purchase any audiobook product. The audiobook credits expire 2 years from their date they are issued. In addition, UltimateListener members get discounts of 50% off any subscription product and 20% off audiobook product not bought using your UltimateListener audiobook credits. "
Try switch my member ship, and if that doesn't work:
I found out about the Ultimate Listener Plan in one of the threads in this forum. A listner had gotten an email offer. I didn't get it. I, and a friend of mine, have merely emailed customer service and requested the upgrade and it was switched.
We were told that if we use up 12 books in, say six months, wwe can just pay $120 for another 12 books.
Audible is obviously not promoting this Plan. I love its flexibility and ability to load up on books so that I can freely choose what to listen to next.
