Hi,

I would like to comment on one issue that makes me really unhappy with my Logitechs.

Sound is really good on these speakers, BUT they are not what you would expect of
portable speakers in respect to battery durability at all.

I charged my mm50s, after 1hr. using the battery I did not use it for 3 days (!!!), turning it on again it was empty.
Same thing after another charging process.

I talked to the Logitech hotline, and they told me this is correct and normal!

Since it has to be able to respond to remote control inputs it is ALWAYS on standby and will be empty after 3-4 days. Nonetheles, if you charge it, unplug it and let it play it will do so for 10 hrs.
This is not what I expect from a portable device!!! You could not go on a backpacking holiday, after few days without electricity it won't work even when fully charged before but never used for 4 days - in my opinion this is clearly faulty design.

That's a fair point and will be significant to some more than others depending upon their needs.

I personally love the convenience of the 10 hr battery and the fact that it's the only portable I know of with a lithium ion battery that will charge whenever the speakers are plugged in. The idea of dealing with a whole other charger and a bunch of rechargeable C or D cells every time I want to go somewhere (or worse, buying a new set of batteries) is an enormous comparative downside in IMO.

I don't understand why no other manufacturer makes a portable boom box with a lithium ion battery that charges when plugged in. If anyone knows one I'd be interested to hear about it. It would be nice to have that level of convenience with the sound of an IM7

Hi,

in a different forum someone gave the advice to open the speakers, drill a hole or make a small slot for a small switch, in the inside cut the cable to the battery, attach it to the switch and decide yourself by the switch position whether or not you would want the device be in standby for the remote signal or save battery life.

That's a nice and simple idea.

Are you getting near 10 hours on your mm 50's?

I haven't tested it to that extent. I use it for trips vacations, (hotel rooms etc). In that situation, I leave it plugged in most of the time and unplug it for short periods, like for dinner on the deck.

I've never seen it run out, but have never tried more than a few hours. I expect to be depending on battery life more in the future.

It sounds really good, for a true portable. The IM7 has more power and much more base, but is not the kind of thing you want to take in your suitcase on every out of town trip.

IMO, The MM50 has an excellent balance between portability, convenience and sound.

Thanks Pete!! I mostly want to take these speakers to tailgate parties (Packers) :) and if I'm not at a game, use them for pregame music while we party here getting ready for a game.

If you can spend a little more, check out the Altec Lansing im9. Still very portable, but much better sounding, especially in the bass, which the MM50 is hurting for.

Get the Altec iM7s for tailgate parties. Perfect. Not as small as the others but MUCH bigger sounding I bet. In a car you have the room. You supposedly get 8-10 hours out of 8 D batteries (I haven't used mine long enuf to tell yet). You're just not gonna take it on a plane very often.

There's nothing wrong with that suggestion and it may be your best bet. But keep in mind, that the extra convenience with the MM50s is the fact that you never have to change or buy batteries, and (only with the MM50) charging is as easy as plugging it in.

So any more feedback on battery life?

Are you guys keeping it plugged in all the time or just when the battery is drained?

Lithium ion shouldn't have battery memory so you don't want to discharge it nor need to.

But it's suppose to have a limited number of recharge cycles right?

And same thing for the iPod if you dock it while the speakers are plugged in?

Any speaker with a remote control needs to keep a trickle of power for the IR window, even if the device isn't being used. This is why your battery runs down so fast even if you haven't listened to it. Some manufacturers (Altec Lansing iM3c) address this by supplementing the "standby" switch on the front of the speaker with a hard on/off switch on the back that disbles the IR receiver & thus, saves battery life.

Though some people prefer rechargeables, when they're dead, they're dead, until you can get to AC power again. With iPod battery life improving significantly with recent models, it's usually the portable speakers with rechargeable batteries that are the week link in the playback longevity contest; plus, you can nearly always carry a spare alkaline set. Not so with rechargeables.

Also, rechargeable batteries on the larger portable speakers are impractical. The cost for batteries with enough power to run these larger speakers would be far in excess of what you'd be willing to pay.

I have a mm50 that i got as refurb. I can't get it to work without being plugged in. is there anything that I could be doing wrong, or is it probably defective?

Dead batteries?

Can't believe they die so quick.
