i got that error on my 9856 the other day...right before i got it, the ipod tried to play a movie i have on it -- i assumed it was because the alpine was incapable of playing it through the HU

i called Alpine, they suggested resetting the headunit (with the little button under the face plate) .. did it, and it worked good for about an hour.

they also suggested checking the firmware - ive got the latest on there.

then on my own i tried resetting the ipod, still no improvement.

i cant listen to more than 40 minutes of music without it resetting.

does anyone else have the iPod full speed/9857 on a 3rd Gen iPod that is having this problem?

my next thing i'm going to try is doing a full rebuild on the iPod with the apple firmware utility and start with just a few tracks on it and see if it still has the problem.

also, i have to see if it does it on a non 3G ipod this weekend.

:(

otherwise its a great headunit.

Mine is working fine with 3 different Pods, sounds like you got a bum Alpine, swap it out!

nissamissa - of the 3 different ipods you have used were any of them 3rd generation 40 gig ipods?

Nope, mine are all 5g. But my friend has it hooked up to a 3g with no complaints.

From the manual
Error-01
>>Comunication error.
Turn the ignition off, then set to ACC or ON again.
Check the display by reconnecting between ipod and adapter.

In other words recheck all leads between ipod and Headunit.

Check the connections. The cord connecting your Ipod to the headunit might have been installed incorectly. Be sure to check that. Or have the connector replaced.

I get error 1 when i switch to mix mode. I hit mix mode and it gets suck on ablum mix and then after a feww secs i get the error. I have to turn the head unit off and then back on and then it goes to song mix mode. this is the only problem i've had with head unit so far

i hooked up a nano 4 gig this weekend and it worked perfect the whole weekend, no error 01 - so im going to guess its the 3g ipod i'm trying to use and not the head unit/install .. so now i have to figure out what's wrong with this old iPod ..

its a 40 gig 3rd gen with a non-apple replacement battery, that's the only thing i can think might cause a problem but that doesn't make much sense to me .. or maybe there's something wrong with the dock connector on the iPod. When I get time this week I am going to do the rebuild with the apple updater and see if that fixes anything .. but i doubt it will.

Well I'm using the 60gb video Ipod and I too get the error 01 when I'm in the album mix mode. I can't seem to get to the song mix mode at all. I'm going to try another Ipod shorly, but this is frustrating

does anyone else who is having this problem have a 3rd gen with a non-apple replacement battery? it almost seems like i get the error (the ipod disconnects) when the ipod finishes charging ..

I had the exact same problem with a CDA-9857 I bought from Crutchfield. I was using an iPod Mini with it. Tried replacing the cable - no luck. Crutchfield replaced the head unit without any hassle. The new one has been in the car for a week or so and has worked without any problems. I even left it playing overnight and it did fine. Hopefully the problem is confined to a select few units and won't develop in my new one after the warranty runs out.

Now that it's working properly, I love this head unit. It has significantly better sound than my last Alpine (so much so that the wife even noticed it - which is quite an accomplishment), it's got lots of cool features, and the iPod interface works great.
