how much money?
The best earbuds that I know of are the Sennheiser mx-500, and I believe they are around $15 at amazon.com

how are they compared to the apple ear buds?? I currently have some really high end ear buds the "fantopia" or whatever but i dont like them at all. They stay in your ears real well, but each ear is a different length and the extension cable is way too long. I spent $50 on those too, and to top it off they block out WAY too much sound. Its like wearing ear plugs. So lately i have just been using the apple earbuds (got a new pair in the mail today) and they seem to do fine. Im just worried they won't stay in when snowboarding

after much research, i just got the behind-the-neck koss ksc-55...
they sound fantastic (my opinion: best sound for <$20) and they DEFINITELY stay on.
one caveat: some people complain that they're uncomfortable... too tight, pinching behind the ears. but i have a relatively small head (size 7 hat) and i find them very very comfortable (also warm my ears better than buds).
the bass can be a little boomy, but it's very detailed and perfect for outdoor activity.

The apple's heaphones are included in the "earbuds" catagory, so the mx-500 would have better sound quality.
Also, it sounds like your problem with the earbuds you bought is just that they are of the closed type. The mx-500s and iPod headphones are both open.

i know more more annoying than anything else is the different cord lengths for each ear. I think illjust stick with the apple ear buds and hope they stay in while snowboarding. They sent me a new pair in the mail yesterday so im happy....except for the fact that my ipod crapped out today after school and seems to be not working anymore...apple warranty here i come again!

what exactly is wrong with it?

the right ear bud cord length is about 3x as long as the left cord in order to wrap the cord over your ear to take "less weight" off the bud itself so it stays in your ear. This however is not something i care about because i want to throw them on and just go. Not mess with cords and settings and wrapping and winding. They are just a big hassle. Plus when i put them on i can't hear anything. Keep in mind folks im going to be wearing a beanie or some sort of snowboarding hat when boarding so there will be limited access...im not sure what im gonna do

If you want something really clean and "bassy," I love Bose's triport in -ear units. They come with sized silicone inserts that attach for ear size. The sound is terrific and still allows a lot of ambient noise through. This is also a downside. The sound that comes through makes it harder to here the subtle nuances of music. However, if you are only listening biggy or mnm this isn't really an issue. The other weak point is the inserts don't hold onto the driver housings very well. I fixed this buy actually gluing mine on after they came off in my ears for the 5th time. I used the epoxy but, I'm sure "crazy" glue will be fine. Just don't use anything with a solvent base. It might attack the components. Bose gave me replacements for free but, this might change after they break even on the units. If anyone knows of a really good and loud set of headphones that sound okay off the ear ie around the neck, i'd love to hear
P.S. if you route tri-port's cord behind your arm you will snag it on stuff a lot less
