I'm planning on doing a custom install in my soon to be delived Toyota Solara convertible. I'll be using an iPod car adapter that will allow me to connect the ipod directly into the factory stereo, will allow some control from both the iPod and the car stereo etc. So far, so good. This will connect using an iPod dock connector.
My issue is that I would like the installation to use something like a standard iPod dock. This will both position the iPod nicely and make it easy to take my iPod with me when I leave the car and put it in when I return.
I have a few standard apple 3g/4g docks and have found, by using the new apple wired remote as a test, that only a few of the pins in the dock connector actually pass through from the rear dock cable connector to the iPod. I think only the pins required for firewire and usb are wired.
So I'm looking for something that will serve as a dock that will allow the dock connector from the car adapter to plug in from the rear and allow the ipod to be mounted in a semi-upright position. It must, of course, pass more pins that the standard dock.
BTW, I'll be using a 5g iPod.
I don't know if the newer Apple dock does any better in this regard.

Thanks,

Tom

I am looking for the same. After installing my USA spec adapter I found out that I cannot use the dock. This makes the USA spec adapter useless for me. I feel like returning it. Where can I find a dock that is passive and transfers all of the signals? Or where can I find a female connector in case I want to make my own dock.

I'm glad to see someone's tried it. Does your iPod charge in this configuration? If so, then there's still some utility in having this adapter instead of a generic non-ipod car connector. I've considered a few options given that I suspect no such ready made dock exists.

1) Use the usa spec adapter in the direct mode to connect to the dock for charging but use the other input on the adapter for audio by connecting the mini phono on the dock to the USA-SPEC adapter. This lets everything except work except only the ipod can be used for control, not any of the car controls. I suppose that it would be just as easy to use a non iPod adapter and wire power to the dock using a car charging cable.

2) Build the iPod connector from the USA-SPEC adapter into some type of custom dock. This would likely requre, in my case, taking the connector apart. Possibly the shell from an iPod dock could be used.

Yes the Ipod does charge but only if you buy the Ipod adapter. The Aux adapter will not charge the Ipod.

1) This option I do not want the use. Because of noise etc. It would be much more cheaper to go this way with a FM modulator but this would reduce the sound quality again.

2) This is what I want to do but I would want to use a second cord to build it in my console. I would not need the Ipod dock any more.

I will call/E mail spec usa to get my hands on a cord.

A: Move the firewired Data pins to the locatinos you need.

B: Buy a full pinned JAE connector.
