Does anyone make an 12V Amp for the iPod. I find that I don't need or want the whole receiver gig, especially with the ability to tune in FM now. I just want to go iPod -> Amp -> Big ### Speakers. Well, maybe Amp -> iPod for power but I wouldn't want to be too picky.
Ideas?

Specificlly for the iPod - NO.
But u can always get ANY car audio amplifier and hook it up that way.
An car audio amplifier typically has 2 tinny screwdriver-type gain controls (for tweaking, not everyday use) and leave the main volume control to the annoying head u don't want. But if u hook it up to the iPod headphone jack, u should be fine. Not something I would do, but it will work.

I emailed Crutchfield about the direct hook up a couple of days ago and their response was:
"You won't be able to connect your iPod directly to an amplifier because of the input voltage and other issues."
So that's why I came to "the lounge". Hmmmmm. I'll keep looking. I really need amplified speakers instead. That way if I ever attempted to hook up a LCD for video I wouldn't be reworking the system.

if you are looking for a portable system that u can play in a van for example, just a boombox, or Apple's Hifi amplified speakers is probly what u want.
if u want a permanent car installation... so u know, we car audio enthusiasts look down on self-powered speakers :p , not to mention good luck trying to fit those in the tight confines of a vehicle.

It's a ski boat with a tower. There's presently no stereo installed and why would you really want one. That why I was thinking built in amp. Have you seen tower spekers?

The cans provide plenty of room. They have something like it for motorcycles.

Earlier you mentioned connecting straight to an amp. Have you tried it. Has anyone out there tried that? What's the worst that can happen?

A boat! OK u should have plenty of room then.
What can happen is you may have to purchase a higher power amp to get the desired output 'cuz the output of the iPod is kinda low, but other than that.... If u can affort 1G speakers, why do u worry about a $200 iPod? (rethorical).
Just tell me where you frequent so I stay away from your area! I like my water activities sooding :)
