Ok, been searching but either get no hits (or waaay too many to sort thru). So is it just me or is this a documented problem...

Can't charge my 5G using the included USB sync cable and a Belkin 12V-to-USB adapter. (like this) (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=1979&pcount=&Product_Id=191843#) The adapter plugs into a lighter socket, has a USB port on the user side, and has enough juice to charge my PDA and cell phone. 12V goes in, 5V at 400mA comes out, I hook up the 5G but the iPod never says "Charging"!

Is this typical behavior? Hey iPod gurus: Does the iPod need to be "told" to charge by the host device?

<flame shields on!> Please don't just suggest I should go buy some dedicated iPod charger or big ol' car dock. Though I'm sure that would work, I'm trying to carry around less stuff. Since I already have the OEM sync/charge cable and a known-good USB power source, why shouldn't it work?

It's you.

Same thing with Googles, no matter how powerful its search engine is, only the user can supply the "correct" term(s) to retrieve just the right amount of info.

I don't have a black&white answer. But I can tell u that my iPod doesn't say charging either when I use 5v USB to charge (takes longer), but does say charging when I use Firewire 12v (charges faster and iPod gets a tad warmer). Both method work for me, depending how hurried I am.

May I suggest just ignore the charging message? If you leave it plugged in overnight, and it works all day next day, it works, otherwise something is wrong.

that's a negative. as people have used a playstation to charge.

Buy WHATEVER works for you. Except that.... the iPod REALLY wants a charger capable of 700mA output or more. 400mA may work, but it may take 3 times as long to charge.

Do whatever makes ya happy.
