well i just got this 60 gig ipod photo from a freind and he screwed something up on it. so he gave it to me for a little bit of money. now i'm trying to fix it. I have tried to go into the disk mode and format it with the hp formatting tool but everytime i try to do it it freezes up or never shows apple ipod option on it. I tried to the apple updater to if i'm lucky(when it don't freeze) i get "cannot mount ipod error. I looked in to the computer management under usb controllers i see a USB mass storage drive and this is what i get.

someone said to plug it in with disk mode and try to format it with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (I know this process works since have tried it on my current ipod). I tried that it didn't work since the computer was not able to detect it.
I can't see it in my computer at all but I can see it through this

Some one also suggested that it was physically damadged but it is not. I would really appreciate someone could help me find this dimond in the rough.

1-Is this a 4G or a 5G iPod?
2-What OS version are you using?
3-Does the iPod turn on and show a full battery?
4-Does it show the menu on the iPod screen?
5-Do you get any error messages?
6-Have you tried letting the battery discharge first?

7-Is it still under warranty? Check here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod
You may need it since it sounds like the HD could be corrupt.
8-Have you tried resetting it.

Have you tried any of these troubleshooting tips:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711

You may need a new HD.

Reset your ipod by holding menu and action, but i doubt resetting it would work, try plugging it into your computer, then forcing disk mode (after reseting, hold fast-forward and rewind buttons), then hope that your computer recognizes it and update/restore
