You can't go wrong with the big name DJs like Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Sasha and DJ Tiesto.

If you like progrssive trance, check out BT (aka Brian Transeau). ESCM is his best album to date IMHO.

I have three staples in my collection:

John '00' Fleming - For your ears only
- Tends to lean towards progressive trance

Plastic Compilation Vol 3
- Progressive House. Cliq Hop Beats w/ some smooth vocals

DJ Dan - Another Late Night
- Trancey goodness

Check out www.powershout.com for some streaming music, you can normally find some good stuff there. Else check out www.netmusique.com for some alternative dance stuff (deep / vocal / tech / dub / disco house).

This time I won't accidentially post this as a new thread... Yeah so for starters definitely get some Chemical Brothers, Orbital, and Propellerheads. As everyone else says, Oakenfold mixes are good standards. Hybrid is quite nice too. Some excellent stuff I would absolutely recommend is TbO and Vega, who have most of their music up for download on their own site http://www.tbo-vega.de/english/frames.htm (actually mostly mp3.com) Hope this helps build a good solid collection, from there you just find more and you're not quite sure how...

I you're looking for techno, have a look at the following labels :

Techno, Hard Techno :

Tresor : http://www.tresorberlin.de
Kanzleramt : http://www.kanzleramt.com/

Tech-House, Minimal Techno :
Kompakt : http://www.kompakt-net.de/
Thinner : http://www.thinnerism.com ( you can download most of their songs FREE and LEGAL )

IDM (minimal, experimental, less danceable)
Boards Of Canada, Sutekh, Twerk, Richie Hawtin, Vladislav Delay, Bola.

For the Trance side of techno, go by DJ names :
Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Johan Gielen, Sasha, Digweed, and most of the DJ recording on the "Global Underground" series.

House :
Steve Lawler, Peter Rauhofer.

A good source of info on Techno is the Groove Magazine (maybe more on the minimal/experimental.

also, have a look at www.discogs.com, is a web site that tries to create the ultimate electronic music database.

also, the ishkur electronic guide at http://www.ishkur.com/features/music/guide.htm, when available will be a nice resource to list some of the major category of Techno music. There an older version of that somewhere on the web, I trying to locate it...

I found the old "ishkur's guide to electronic music" it's a flash thingy and can be downloaded from (right-click and "save as...":
http://www.technorealm.net/images/flash/electronic_music.swf

Welcome to the techno world.

not to be seen as being too cynical, but the word "techno" gets overused a lot these days. i kinda don't see it as being the catch all phrase that is usually "electronica."

techno is generally the earlier stuff pioneered by juan atkins, derrick may, kevin saunderson, eddie fowlkes, underground resistance, etc.

now it's mostly the chain reaction, basic channel, and of course, the most "purist" techno label of them all, TRESOR.

if you want to try some "deep" techno, then i can't recommend www.thinnerism.com highly enough. all their singles, ep's, and albums are available for FREE via download at high quality 192 kbs mp3's. and, in case you missed it, it's FREE, i.e. you have nothing to lose by going and checking them out.

the stuff i love most falls into the thinner, basic channel, chain reaction type of slightly askew, very minimal techno and techdub. it isn't for everyone, but it's what i'm most addicted to.

as to what is most popular these days, it's progressive house. it's not bad, mind you, but i'm not crazy about it.

check out the global underground series of compilations if you like prog house. GU is pretty much the world leader in good, classy underground prog and tech house.

there's a great magazine available in most good book stores called XLR8R which features reviews of a lot of good "electronica" and i highly recommend picking it up.

if i was up to it, i'd export a playlist of all my files (some 20,000 songs) which is mostly electronica, but i think posting a file that big here might not be a good idea. :(

Thanks for the link to Thinner.. Excellent stuff there.. I also highly recommend Hybrid, which was mentioned earlier.. I really love they way they blend electronica with orchestral instruments, especially in 'Finished Symphony'.

For some downtempo stuff, check out also the 'Back To Mine' series, featuring DJs and artistes famous for their more upbeat hard techno stuff, but spinning their favorite 'chill-out' tunes.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You (2000)

One of the best albums of its time, electronic or otherwise. And aging quite gracefully, I might add. This is one of the funnest albums I have, and if you're into the Propellerheads, you definitely should check this thang out. Great, great stuff.

What EVERYONE needs for their ipod is some bangin', dirty, drum and bass. Here are some good dj's to get off kazaa or overnet
Andy C
DJ Hype
Grooverider
Dillinja and Lemon D
J Majik
DJ Craze
or visit www.breakbeat.co.uk

Or get some happy hardcore. Just stay away from techno and hard house. Thats rave music for amateurs.

Uhg!

I don't like Drum'n'Bass, Jungle, Hardcore, and Happy-hardcore!
(i was at a party a couple of years ago, where Omar Santana was spining, and he was lined-up between more conventional techno sets, it was funny seeing the faces of people trying to understand what was going on! and trying to keep the tempo! )

If you want good ol' Bangin' Techno just go to a party with Misstress Barbara and Christian Smith, or buy their CDs or download live sets, they are great bangin' Techno DJ.
They were both in Montreal last sunday night (well, monday morning!) for a excellent DJ session at the Aria after-hours.

or going harder, on the techno sode of things,

Marco Carola "The 1000 Collection"
Thomas P. Heckmann "Welt In Scherben I-V"
Speedy J "Loudboxer"
Visco Space "The Clas of '84"
Heiko Laux "Classic Open"
The Advent "Sketched For Life"
The Mover "Frontal Frustration"
Cristian Vogel "Dungeon Master"

techno and hardhouse is for amateurs? sorry, kiddo, but i was slamming juan and kevin's "kiddie techno" records on turntables for the people 10 years before you ever heard of techno. in fact, if it wasn't for these detroit ni**az, you wouldn't have a lick of the drum and bass you go crazy for. that's right, carl craig's "bug in the bass bin" is one of the architect tunes for drum n' bass. why don't you ask 4hero about that tune?

oh, you prolly don't know 4hero. i suggest you go look it up.

man, i'm sorry, and the admins can ban me forever for this and i will understand. i will be sorry, but i can understand if they do so, because i am going to tell you off.

techno made your drum 'n bass. techno made your happy hardcore. inner city detroit MADE YOUR MUSIC. DETROIT MADE TECHNO.

you're callous and ignorant comments that techno "is for amateurs" is an insult i cannot bear. drum & bass and jungle would have never existed if not for a few renegade ni**ers in detroit. all of electronic music bows down to detroit, your disrespect cannot be ignored. YOU NEED TO GET A CLUE.

i apologize to the forum moderators. i apologize to the readers of this very nice site. i know i may suffer some consequences, but this post is bullsh** and needs to be sussed out as that.

amateur. amateur. we were in this before you were born, you ill-spoken, fool!

It seems I hurt your soul, and everything you stand for. Well GOOD, cos I really hate all those Americans who take themselves so seriously, just cos theyre American and they don't need to know about the rest of the world..... Techno started Drum n Bass? Well England started America so shut your mout'.

But basically I don't really think you understood me:
Yeah maybe detroit pionered dance music, I werent saying that the music was bad or should not be credited. Infact, I like the music (I like all dance music). I dont really know, I've never been to detroit, I've onyl heard that it's pure scum.

For me, times and music are always changing and it's always the new forms of music which are paving the way forward. The old skool is for reflecting, the new stuff has excitment as it's progressing. Drum and Bass is definatley doing that, I dont think its hit America yet, but in England its huge (seeing as nearly all of the DJ's and producers are English). If you wanna be 'a pro' then get into this music while it's progressing so you can be part of it, and in ten years time you can tell everyone you were there, just like you doing with your techno music.
You just wait until Andy C comes across the atlantic with the valve sound system, it'll be all over (for your ears anyway).

I also say you have to be a 'pro' cos drum and bass music is quite hard to tolerate. A lot of people cant listen to it cos its too loud Basically, everyone can like techno, it's universal, drum and bass is a bit different.

I'm sorry if anyones offended by the American and Detroit jokes, (you still dont understand British humor then). I love America, been there a couple of times and its a great place and I'm sure Detroit is a beautiful city.

what are you talking about? techno is probably the hardest genre besides the sub genres such as dark techno.

you arep robably thinking of jungle, which is the faster harder version of drum n bass

as for me i mainly listen to trance
www.tranceaddict.com (for real trance fans)
www.di.fm (for newbie trance listeners ie:cheese)

if it wasnt for those two websites and trance i'd probably would still be listening to top 40 rap and r&b right now
trance
uplifting trance
proggressive trance
hard trance
are mainly what i listen to

AND DONT CALL IT TECHNO

(You sure have read the book)

you trying to tell me about what drum n bass is!!????
Jungle is not faster or harder than d&b, it's just different

I think you may be thinking about the commercial side of d&b, (powerpuff girls perhaps) but you obviously dont have a clue about whats happening in London at the moment. Go to Fabric, Mass, or the End and you will see what I mean. Or just download a set by Andy C.

Let me also explain about the valve sound system.
Designed by Lemon D and Dillinja, it is the only sound system in the world to specifically amplify the bass, whereas all other sound systems only target the 'commerical' frequencies. The valve sound system is definatley the loudest in the world, and America will never get it.

if it wasnt for those two websites and trance i'd probably would still be listening to top 40 rap and r&b right now
Your #### right, keep doing your bedroom research and you'll be on top.;)

this topic reflects the ignorance and poor quality of Ameircan dance music and its people.
The only thing America is good for right now is hip-hop, everything else has just gone wrong.
The fact is you have to be 21 in US to drink, so I you have to be 21 to get into a club, which means we're all much more experienced than you lot.

Bottom line is: Europeans party much harder than Americans. It's a known fact.

Rather than a discussion of techno, this thread has degraded into a "US vs. UK" flame war and is therefore being locked.
