It's not earbuds specifically, it's the volume level. Any pair of headphones can damage your hearing over the long term if you have the volume cranked up. And closed-ear IEMs may actually be better than open-air phones because the sound isolation helps keep the user from having to turn up the volume to compete against ambient noises.

Most doctors (including myself) recommend that you keep the volume down and give your ears a break every 30 minutes to an hour by taking the headphones off.

anything that gives a better fit

people are gonna go deaf because of the improper fit they get from the ibuds. they must turn the volume way up inorder to hear the o-so-outstanding details from their 128kbs music.

if you use your ipod in a noisy environment such as a school, train or on the streets, get a pair of noise isolation headphones
the cheaper ones are
JVC HA FX55
Griffen Earthumps
Sennheiser CX300
sony ex 51, 71, 81

the higher ends are
panasonic RP-HJE70
shure e2, e3, e4, e5
ultimate ears superfi. 3, 5, 5EB
etymotic 6, 6i

JVC should set you back 20 dollars, good for a budget. The superior Sennheiser model is about 50.
