Was wondering what EQ setting you guys use with the EX71's.

I find most of the settings such as rock, pop and even bass booster to have too much treble. Treble reducer makes the music too muddy.... i found Flat is the best. i listen to lots of loud and angry music like the deftones and electronic stuff (drum n bass, etc)

Most folks will tell you not to bother with the Ipods equalizer--it distorts too much. The EX's aren't a very good earphone to begin with--they sound very muddy even without the equalizer--I'd recommend getting a better earphone if you're having issue with "muddiness"; this is a consistent and classic complaint with the EX's.

Assuming you won't give up your $50 headphones.. I use the Hip-Hop setting with my EX71's

DMT1 is absolutely right. The EQ is horrid, and just causes distortion, while the EX71s are muddy whatever you do. It's like criticising a cow for eating grass. It's what they do.

Well,

I use the EX71's and just recently, I cannot tell the difference between one EQ setting and another with these headphones, which is kind of interesting because when i first got them, I distinctly remember a very new and crisp sound from them.

Oh well, I guess my ear is even more discriminating. I turn the EQ either on flat or on jazz when I listen now.

Anybody want to give me a better earbud for the price than the nude EX's, I'm all ears (pardon the pun!)

Well I just received my 71s a week ago. I didn't feel comfortable spending any more than $40 for canal buds because I can't use them at work (need to hear what's around me.)

Anyway... at this time I'm using the Electronic EQ setting. It doesn't saturate and distort the bass like the Loudness or Bass Boost settings do. I also find that it depends on the type of music and quality of the recording.

...well I stand corrected. As I'm typing this I'm listening to Mark Knopfler's Sailing to Philidelphia album and the bass on "Speedway at Nazareth" is splattering all over the place. I guess Flat or Off it is.

How much are you willing to spend, and do you want isolation (ear canal phone, such as the EX), or is an earbud OK?

Earbuds on the cheap--Senn 400MX are fantastic sounding, but uncomfortable for me--depends on your ear though. E888's are more pricey, but probably what I'd go with for a bud because of Jacko's rec--but I find buds uncomfortable; again, that's just my personal preference.

Earphoness on the relatively less cheap: Shure E2's for about $80.00--great value for the quality of sound you get--my favorite of the relatively less expensive in ear phones.

Earphones price is no object: Ety 4P's--I simply love these--these sound better than a decent set of cans, cost about $220.00; the Shure E5's are also well respected--don't own these, they cost $500.00

Headphones Cheap: Koss KSC 55's, or Sennheiser PX100 or 200--great for the money, and portable.

Headphones more Expensive: Grado SR 60's--about $70.00--sound fantastic, my favorite headphone in this price range, better than anything except for the Ety 4P's and Shure E5's on this list. Not portable though.

These are just MY personal preferences after too much time trying different earphones/buds/cans--it's a reference point only--you really need to try them yourself to see what works best for you.
