I've been having problems with headphones auto pausing my iPod (4G / 20 gigs) for a long time now, and I'm getting pretty sick of it. I put a little piece of tape in between there but it didn't really help.

I've been using a Sennheiser PX100, and although I love these phones... I can't really stand having to reach into my pocket, put the iPod off hold, put it on play again... to do the same thing a little later on again.

It apparently has something to do wit the plug used having a little metal plate... so what other headphones suffer from this problem? I'm looking for something very much like the PX100 / 200's, but I really want to avoid this problem.

I would have thought that most, if not all headphones on the market today will cause the iPod to auto-pause when they are taken out - but if your iPod pauses arbitrarily, I would be inclined to think that it is a problem with your iPod, rather than your headphones. Have you tried checking if your headphones cause anyone else's iPods to pause without removal, or if any other headphones you posess cause your iPod to pause?

Having said this, how can you be sure that it is the presence of your headphones that is causing your problem? Yes, it certainly seems the most likely - the iPod is designed to pause on removal of headphones (or other output device), and it is logical that the only time your iPod is pausing is while music is playing through the headphones...

If I were you, I would play music through your iPod without connecting headphones, and see if it pauses. Then test your headphones with someone else's iPod, and see if it pauses. Then test your iPod with another set of headphones, and see if it pauses. If the results of these tests come out (positive, negative, positive) respectively, I would take your iPod to an Apple Store to get it seen to.

Hope this helps. Welcome to iLounge.

I have the same problem. Not with headphones, but with a particular set of speakers. The Ipod will pause with the slightest movement of the speaker jack, even just moving the table that the Ipod is resting on. This doesn't happen with any headphones or other speakers, suggesting that it is definitely the speaker jack that is the problem, and not the Ipod.

if u youngsters have searched the forum, u would have found this to be one of those "known" problems.

it's a simple worn mechanical thing, with the jack, when old then become loose (internal) and closing that switch even when u haven't unplug it.

Why does it do this with some phone and not others? take both of your working and not-working phones plug up to your eyeballs, look at them, they are not identical! they are slightly different shape. That's why.

Now the permanent fix would be to open the iPOD and mechanically "fix" that jack. Do u own a soldering iron.

Otherwise look at the good plug and see if u can purchase one and replace tha plug on your favorite phones. But again, soldering iron required.

Lastly, u can always have someone repair it, but it would probly be cheaper just to unload it on eBay (please do mention the problem), and get yourself a new POD.
