I've been searching around headphone forums and one of the most common complaints about canalphones (sony ex series, panasonic hje50, creative/sharp, etc.) is that the treble is too bright and often causes sibilance.
I have a pair of jvc ha fx55, as good as they are, the treble is a tad bright for my liking but more annoying to me is the quality of it. It sounds really artificial as opposed to the wonderful treble on my modded sony e888's.
So just to reiterate from others who have done this mod, i took the paper top off the stem (used an exacto knife and gently scraped it off), filled the hole with cheap foam i got from a gift package, and used a small piece of clear plastic tape to reseal the top. I then poked a small hole in the center with a thumb tack.
Now the treble is less splashy, it didn't change the quality of it but just made it less noticeable. And with that in mind, the mids and bass are more forward.
This mod won't make drastic improvements in the sound quality but it will give it a much more balanced presentation.
