I am having serious problems with my 4G 20gig Ipod Photo/Colour. I have both an iBook G4 and a Windows PC. Initially my music collection was on the iBook so my Ipod was Mac formatted.

The first error I got was about 6 months after I bought it. I tried to turn on my Ipod and got the Apple logo, followed by the exclamation/folder icon with the ipod support address underneath. However, after restoring the Ipod using my iBook, everything seemed fine.

Maybe a month after the first failure I had the same problem again: Apple logo, followed by the exclamation/folder icon. This time I decided to resore the iPod using my Windows machine. After perhaps 4 hours of troubleshooting with various failed restore attempts, the iPod eventually restored successfully (with the latest software). From then on the Ipod was Windows formatted.

Another month rolls by, and yet again the now familiar exclamation mark/folder icon rears its ugly head. I try restoring using my Windows machine numerous times, but I am unsuccessful. At this point, I'm convinced the iPod hard drive has failed, and take it to the Genius Bar in the Apple Store in London. Rather annoyingly however, they are able to restore it for me within minutes.

Not even a fortnight after this, the exclamation/folder icon appears AGAIN. I Try restoring using the Windows machine; no luck. I Try restoring with my iBook, and it works after the 2nd restore. However, I need my iPod to be Windows formatted, so I take this freshly restored, Mac formatted iPod and I'm able to restore it on the Windows machine first time.

A WEEK later, I switch on and get the apple logo, followed by the sad face icon!! A repeating clicking sound is clearly audible, much louder than the clicks from when it failed previously. What on earth is going on? It's gotta be the hard drive right? I suspect another restore would work, but only temporarily.

I bought my 4G 20gig Ipod Photo/Colour in July 2005 so it is still under warrenty. Everything worked fine until maybe January 2006.

Any suggestions?

Wow seems a complicated problem. My ipod is showing de Sad face but my ipod dosen't appear on my computer so I can't restore it.

If the Sad Face appear try restarting you're ipod 5-10 times, works for me. But it reapear 3 days later.
