View Full Version : Moving iTunes from one PC to another

I have bought a new PC and I am moving iTunes to the new machine. I have copied all my iTunes music onto an external hard-drive. I installed iTunes on my new machine, plugged in the external drive and changed the iTunes directory to the one on the external drive. As the new machine is a laptop this seemed to be the safest option as all my songs won't fit on it's internal hard drive.

I then imported the library.xml file I had exported from my old machine. I can see all my songs and all my play lists appear, but all my songs now have no rating and everything is checked, where as on the old machine about 30% of the library was unchecked.

I have not synced my iPod for fear of losing everything. I have around 11,500 songs on my iPod and around 16,000 on my PC. Rating everything again is not a trivial task and I

It's always going to be a bit dodgy having your tracks on a drive that Windows could rename (change the letter) at any time. I think that this is perhaps the possible root of your problem. Not having a similar setup I can't try anything to prove this on your behalf.
