I emailed apple a few days ago to see if they would give me any information on the docking connector, I also specifically asked if the remote commands can be used through the dock connector. They told me about the non disclosure act etc, but they also said:
"Yes the remote commands are available through the bottom connector"
So it seems that it is possible to use one dock cable to give you power, line out and the remote commands.
I?ve found these websites, one (http://www.maushammer.com/systems/ipod-remote/ipod-remote.html) which has information about the iPod's remote protocol and which one (http://www.k9spud.com/vwcdpic/) which sells a product that converts the cd changer output into rca input connections and it also has a remote command output.
I know it is possible to control the iPod from a head unit as the Ice-Link does that, but I would like to use just one connector.
If anyone can help with this I would be grateful.

Can anyone see the possibilities for this or is it just me?

Great Links! I want to incoporate a clean single connection for my IPOD in the car. I am hoping to intergrate it with the controls on my head unit.

Did you by any chance happen to find a schematic for the dock connector?

Did you by any chance happen to find a schematic for the dock connector? No, apple hasn?t released it yet. There must be an easy way to find out which pin it is by using a multi meter, you could see which pin on the dock connecter is connected to the remote input pin on the top (link (http://www.lockup.org/dock/)). I don't know if this will work but if someone wants to try it....
