Currently I'm using EX71s and am looking for a new pair of in ear headphones for some long haul flights and regular long train journeys.

ER6i - Reviews vary between five stars, and raving about how good the sound is, and 1 star, saying that they're absolutely terrible. I don't know, the appeal is how small they are, I don't want something huge hanging out my ears.

E2c - overall good sound, but from the pictures they seem too big, and I wouldn't to wear them with the lead going behind the ear. Other than that, they seem ok?

CX300 - cheapest and safest bet, like EX71 but better sound.

Any thoughts?

PS. Can't get the panasonic HJE70s here...

if you like the look and feel of the ex71's, get the senns and save some money

ER6i - good sound (but very flat and cold) and tinny if they don't fit, over-priced
E2C - uncomfortable, over-priced.

The sound isolation element though is appealing with the ER6i. The seal of the EX71s at the moment doesn't do that much to mute the sound of the train or people talking...

I had the Koss Sparkplugs (I know I know, it was an impulse buy without doing any research, I didn't realise it was humanly possible for headphones to sound so bad) but I could never get a particularly good seal, the sound was ok, but not much of the outside wold was muted.

Nevermind, I'll probably go for the Sennheisers.

Oh, I've heard contrasting reviews between the ER6 and ER6i earphones. Some say ER6i is perfect for iPod but others say the ER6 have much better sound. I dunno, I have Sennheiser HD497s for indoor use and although the sound is quite flat (natural) with slightly exaggerated bass I quite enjoy the sound.

Dont buy E2 if you wont use the lead over the ear. If you dont they are uncomfortable.

If you do put it over your ear they are very comfortable. I will often fall asleep wearing them.

Why wont you wear them over your ears?

I don't know, I like minimal faffing on the train. The big that sits outside the ear on the E2c looks quite big from what I can gather from the pictures as well.

The big bit lays flat and sits flush with the outside of my ears, and I am told my ears are small.

I can put them in nearly as fast as a pair of Sony buds, they are more comfortable, and they dont get pulled out so easy.

But if they are not for you, then you do need to buy something else.

For flights the cheap Phillips active sound cancelling phones are surprisingly good.

Ok... i'm intrigued by the E2Cs. I've had a look on the shure website and they claim they'll block out almost all external sound. However, they seem basically the same fit as EX71s which don't block out that much? Maybe someone can correct me.

The biggest drawback with the Shures, and I assume all IEMs, is the godawful noise when you are eating :)

I find that IEMs tend to lose their seal when I'm eating, or if I yawn, which is why I generally don't like them. In contrast, my PX200s have no problem maintaining a seal.

The level of satisfaction that anyone experiences with IEMs in general seems to depend apon the size and shape of their ears.
