I have just connected my newly purchased ipod for the first time and have run into problems. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Before i plugged into my USB port i was able to turn my ipod on and off and navigate the menus as there was some charge in the battery. But now, the screen is locked on (but not backlit) and I can't turn the ipod off or change anything. The Hold button is not on. I have tried resetting with the hold button on, and again with it off, but nothing happens.

Connection to my PC has not been successful either. I have tried conencting via 3 different USB 2.0 ports and the response is that the device is not recognized or that there has been a malfunction installing the device.

I have tried restarting my PC. I have tried reinstalling the iPod software. But still no joy.

Until my PC is able to recognize my iPod I guess I am not able to charge the battery. Which means it will stay frozen. So I am at a stalemate.

Any suggestions?

Hi bisch,

This sounds like it might be your issue, especially since it is new and they only come with a nominal charge:

When you plug your iPod into a power source, the charging icon appears—it's a lightning bolt over a battery. If the battery is fully discharged, you won't see an animated icon. Instead, you'll see the b/w solid icon (even on a color screen). The icon indicates the battery is charging successfully, but it doesn't have enough charge to power up. When connecting an iPod with a fully discharged battery, it may take up to 30 minutes for iPod to have enough charge to turn on and be recognized by the computer and iTunes.

You can either go to best buy or the like a pick up a usb wall plug to charge it separate from your computer or plug it into the usb port on the computer and leave it there overnight.

Cheers th1 - I've just this second plugged it in again as the screen had finally turned blank after being frozen for the past 5 hours. And there, as you rightly say, is a b/w battery icon! Fingers crossed, all will be well once the charge is complete. Thanks for your reply. I was starting to get worried.

Sweet! I was there myself with my first one so I know where you're coming from!;)

Well, I spoke too soon!

After a short time showing only the b/w battery icon, the screen changed to colour showing the time and the Do not disconnect screen.

15 hours later, it is still showing the same time and refuses to change. So I diconnected it and reconnected it and it is still frozen. Can't believe this is proving to be such a hassle!

Ah! Something is happening!
I finally managed to get the reset to work and now the time has changed to current time and the Do not disconnect is flashing. Let's hope it works this time.
