Hi guys,
I got a bit of a problem. Next Tuesday I am flying from London to Spain and then from Spain to Costa Rica. Not a problem I thought, but I was wrong. This morning my iMac Core Duo got delivered, I opened it and put it down on the desk. Crunch. Picked it up again, there were my Apple Pro Earphones lying there, dead. So I have a problem now. I'm at college, which means my only local shopping place is a small town which has no specialist shops, and I have no headphones for my iPod which means the trip will be unbearable. So what I'm asking is, for £2-£40, what (white, earbud, iPod buffness) headphones should I buy which i could pick up in a typical shop (common shops, HMV, Woolworths, that kind of thing)?
Thanks

HMV, woolworths will only sell cheap earphones, I say just get shure e2c earphone you cant beat them and at £50, ok out of your price range but worth it!

I don't know what stores would sell them, but the Griffen EarThumps are some great, white, in-ear earbuds that're very inexpensive.

Many shops sell the Panasonic HJE50 for about £29
They're white, they're better than Sony EX71s, and they're easy to find.
Otherwise try Phillips She 9500/9501s.
You'd have a better choice if you went to London early and visited the Apple Store.

Yeah I would go to London but I['m at college and I don't have any time to go except Tuesday evening. I'm oly going to ahve two hours tops to do all my shopping - that's going to the post office to buy my dollars, getting all the stuff I'm gonna need to take with me, and getting myself some headphones. I called up he local Dixons and they had Sony EX71s in white for £34.99 but I'll look around for those Panasonic and Philips ones before I buy. Thanks!

I just checked they have the 9501s in white but they don't have the Panasonic things. So I should get the Phillips over the Sony? They're £5 cheaper so that's good. Only thing that worries me it says they are 'adjustable earbuds' does that mean the cable changes size and slides around and does all that weird sh*t? I like the ones where the cable for both buds is just the same length and it goes to a point where it joins and goes into the iPod nothing special but I guess it doesn't matter too much.

The Sonys are rubbish. Most cheap in-ears have a fixed, unequal, Y-shaped cord. I can't comment on the Phillips, though people say they're better than the Sonys.
If it were me, I'd forget white as a factor, and I'd look hard for somewhere that had Sennheiser CX300s in stock. You might find somewhere has them in stock that is also open tomorrow.
Best of luck.

White is kinda important :P It adds at least another half second to the amount of time girls spend staring at me on the trains and planes.

My local HMV has the Apple In-Ear Headphones for £24.99. I'll get those. Firstly, they're cheap, leaving me money to get some James Blunt, Editors, The White Stripes, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinland, Hard-Fi......... Sorry, and secondly they are really simple they have the normal Y shape and stuff which I like I never liked the funny stuff tthe posh headphones do and I have had these before and they sound reasonable.

Now I have a dilemma. I found a local shop that has the Panasonic HJE70 in stock. The reviews here say they are really good, comfortable, etc. How well do they work with the iPod (style wise I mean... I'm a bit nuts in that department, probably the reason I got my iPod anyway) and given that they are £55 which is more than what I want to spend, how good is the quality compared with the Apple Pro In-Ears?
Thanks

The Apple In Ears do NOT fit most people who try them. The quality is mediocre at best.
The HJE70's titanium case alone is 'cooler' than any of the phones you're looking at, and the phones themselves are bright aluminium. They go with the iPod stylistically, and the sound quality is what you'd expect from a £120 earphone.
This decision ought to have become a no-brainer for you.

Yeah, I think I'll get the HJE70s. I know for a fact that the Apple ones do fit me, but still I've decided that the HJE70s do look really good (I just read a review and it had some awesome photos + found some photos on flicr). Less money for things like sun screen and such then, I'll burn for some quality headphones anyday. :D

Right, I'm going into town to get the HJE70s tomorrow after school. I thought they were

You may find that they are LESS in the retail stores. You could quote Astleys in Wallingford selling them for

Hi there,
Hd a bit of a problem see. I went to the shop and that, couldn't find them anywhere and next thing I know the whole shopping centre was kicking everyone out of all the shops and closing up (everything closes at 5 here, how old fashioned is that? I live in Milton Keynes when I'm not at college and nothing closes until at least 6, usually 7 or 8, there.) The only place I could find which was still open was a Sony Centre, so I now have the white EX71s. They don't sound bad, but they aren't brilliant. I will have them for the trip since they are comfortable and sound acceptable and then I'll order the HJE70s online when I get back.
Thanks

Bad luck! Enjoy your trip though.
The Sony EX71 is good and bassy, and is comfortable with good isolation. After the standard buds I thought it sounded good, and even after I realised how muddy the sound was, I kept going back to the EX71 for the comfort.
It's only recently that you've been able to get headphones that are as good at isolation and as comfortable with better sound.
And who knows, Panny's white 71s may be out by the time you get back

How is the isolation on the panasonic's compared to the sony's?

Panosonic HJE71 do you mean? What's difference between HJE70 and HJE71? I'm only gone until the 17th April.

I'd say that the isolation on all the 'soft sleeve' in ears is the same.
EX51/70/71, CX300, HJE50, HJE70, HA FX55, ATH CK7, She 9500/9501, etc.
To get more isolation you need hard sleeves (E2C), double or triple flanges or foamies. I don't find more isolation useful or desirable, personally.

I don't want complete isolation, just a little more than my mx500's.
Anyone know when the HJE-71's come out?

I don't know when, or even if the HJE71 will come out. So far they are little more than a rumour.
Buy the HJE70 while you still can!

The Philips SBC HN060 Noise Canceling In-Ear also can provide enough isolation! They are pretty good also!
Save yourself some money and go for the Sennheiser mx 500s. I was going to buy expensive in-ear phones, but I changed my mind and I'm very satisfied with the sound. Those sound so much better than my standard iPod earphones.
I don't know how good those sony's sound though, maybe you're more picky than I am.

I think the sony/pann/etc in-earphones isolate 16 dbs. The shure/westone/ultimate ears/etymotic all isolate 28-35 db I think. Its around that. Also it depends on which fitting used and model. The foams on the etymotic er4p isolate the most at 35 or so db...
