Alright, this is just me being picky...

but when i connect my ipod to my windows xp pc, it says USB Device not recognized. It has absolutely no effect on the ipod's usability, i'm just curious why it says that.

Is it because I connected the ipod the first time before installing the ipod updater? I've definately seen it just say "Apple Ipod" or something to that effect in other people's trays when they connect to their pc's.

any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, you've pretty much hit it on the head. If you want to clear it up, go to your hardware profile and delete the unidentified USB device. If you're installed the ipod software now, plugging it in should recognize it.

cool. i think it worked? it doesnt pop up or show anything anymore

the "safely remove ..." icon appears in the tray and no messages are displayed

is that normal? or should it say "apple ipod connected" or something to that effect? *i havent rebooted yet--just disconnected & reconnected*

thanks!

I believe that in xp you have to do a reboot to get the ipod software to recognize it, ie give you the ipod connected message.

The trick works for any hardware that gets plugged in before the software is installed - ie PCMCIA cards, bluetooth dongles, etc.
