I know this is a super-hot debate that will probably NEVER end... but I was just wondering... if you purchased an album on cassette 10 years ago (or whenever) & now want a digital copy for your computer and/or iPod, is it still considered stealing if you download a copy? I mean, isn't the whole arguement about stealing music around the initial purchase for personal use thing? So if you bought it on cassette then technically, you already paid for it.

What about if you lent a cd to a friend after you paid for it & never got it back?

What about borrowing cds from the library?

I'm just trying to figure out where I stand on the whole issue & I'm seeking various points of view on the matter. Hopefully I'll hear some interesting points rather than the "you're going to hell" thing or the "you're putting musicians in the poorhouse" thing.

thanks!

in sweden were i live it isnt illegal to download mp3s from the web if its for personal use or for your friends or family.
But its illegal to sell downloaded music and its also illegal to upload mp3 copywrighted mp3 music.
So its a doubel moral its legal to download music but its illegal to upload music

A long and interesting debate took place in the old forums dedicated to Music here (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=general&action=messageindex&start=20) and some of your questions may have been addressed there.
Some good views were laid down and it is interesting reading.
Go on, what else were you going to do this evening?? ;)
