Canon S50 - superb digicam, one of a few compact metal-bodied cameras with full manual controls. Happy overall but disappointed with having to fix red-eye and purple-fringing.
TwinMOS 128mb USB key - Works fine, serves the purpose
Sony Clie - its an older 425 mono model. Novelty has worn off and I haven't used it in ages. I lust after the gorgeous black magnesium NR model with the 2mp camera but I'd probably get bored with it too.
Gameboy Advance - smarting now that the gorgeous, backlit, rechargeable SP is available
My gadget needs are pretty much satisfied now that I have an iPod. Only thing missing is some type of Leatherman/Victorinox tool. That'll be the next purchase or failing that a sexy watch :D

N-GAGE will be Nokia's titanic. Ok maybe not but looking at their initial sales figures I would get back to my drawing board real quick. Just read the reviews on the internet and you'll udnerstand why Ncage is no challenge for the Gameboys out there. Did you know that to load a new game cartridge in the Ncage you have to actually remove the phone's battery to access the game slot? Kind of stupid engineering decision don't you think? BTW, I don't own a gameboy.

as far as the burn speeds go.. this is straight off of apple's site [http://www.apple.com/powerbook/specs.html]
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW): reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed
SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW): writes DVD-R discs at up to 2x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 4x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed
personally i'd rather have the ability to burn a CD (a much more standardized and widely accepted format) at faster rates than be able to burn a dvd portable.. plus, dvd burn times are what.. 40+mins for a full disc? 24x to 16x for CD-R may not seem like that much, but for a drive that isn't swapable.. you're stuck with what you get.. also 10x vs 4x for CD-RW is MUCH welcomed speed :D if i want dvd burning capabilities i'll pick up a firewire drive once prices settle..

Hi, my name is madkins and I am a gadgetaholic. I am TRYING to go straight- you know, one day at a time- but I can't help myself. I go to CompUSA or Amazon.com and see the shiny toys... then next thing I know I'm puting my smoking credit card back and waking up from a daze with a new box of something.
I went cold turkey earlier this week and left my gear bag at home when I went to work, etc.- just the stuff I can pack in my pants pockets and we are playing with dropping one cell phone.
Its tough, but with the support of my family and the higher power (Billy Gates), I'll beat this addiction!

It's been left alert and running for days at a time. It's been running Apache w/PHP, IIS, ColdFusion, MySQL as background services while I paint in Photoshop and code in Dreamweaver and create in Flash and preview in Internet Explorer - all at the same time! By rights, it should be on its last legs, but it's as spry and quiet as the day I bought it.
When I came to buying a new laptop, I knew I wanted a Toshiba because the one I had before it was a Toshiba. This was in about 2001/2002 and the 'one before' was a Pentium 120 or so. The thing had been running at least half a decade...
Really great laptops.

When I came to buying a new laptop, I knew I wanted a Toshiba because the one I had before it was a Toshiba. This was in about 2001/2002 and the 'one before' was a Pentium 120 or so. The thing had been running at least half a decade...
Really great laptops.
I don't have a laptop now because I went to a PC but before this I too had a Toshiba satellite and I spilled a drink of coke in it .. just fixed the keypad .. worked like new .. then we dropped it off the kitchen bench onto tiles .. hard drive a little damaged but still worked .. then my son stood on it .. and it cracked the screen .. but still works. Needless to say it's been tossed now to misuse on everyone's part but it took a beating !!
My husband & son both have new Toshiba satellites and they are very good laptops. I too agree they are great laptops.

Because quite honestly, the Cayman is new and the current buzz is that it outperforms the 911 Carrera in some categories like handling and power/weight. Also, it would be a MUCH more practical daily driver for me - the maintenance costs for a Ferrari are quite prohibitive, unfortunately. A single oil change can cost up to $1000 on certain models.
However, I've always toyed with the idea of owning, or leasing, a Ferrari. If anything, I probably wouldn't get one new, and perhaps an F430 is a stretch since they'll still be quite new and rare on the used market next year. However, I'll settle for a 360 or even a F355. :)

My brother gets the new Ferrari each year they come out and my sister-in-law's butt goes to sleep after about half hour of driving due to the sports suspension. They may be a great car but for driving around town and long distances not always the most comfortable. Also my brother was going to a meeting and someone obviously not happy with his choice of car decides to throw a half eaten hamburger at him. Needless to say he was ####ed so at the next set of lights - kickedboxed the side mirror off their car. If you are going to throw something at someone make sure you are not in traffic near lights !! He was late for his meeting due to having to go home shower & change. They are sometimes not the best thing to have. He drives his other car around for ease & more comfort most of the time now.
Sometimes the car you like best - may not have to be the most expensive.
Again as we have had this conversation before Verita my car of choice would be a 330 coupe BMW. I am happy with my 318 but if I were to be given a car as a prize that's what I would pick - even though it's not the most expensive car around. And if I can keep dreaming I would have black on black, M sports pack, and an ipod connected !!!

I've driven the 360 and the 430 on track and streets, they're definately not a "driver's" car. For less you can get a 550 or 575 which is much easier and more comforable to drive.
IMO it's stupid to lease a Ferrari, again for less $$$ you can buy something like a 911 Turbo S (which I own P.I.F.), it's easier to drive, AWD, less maintainence, better milage and with the few "minor" upgrades I've added it will outperform any Ferrari save the Enzo. If you want a killer driving experience, go buy an STI. I bought one and put another $15,000 under the hood, it does 0-62 in 4.1, I've raced it against plenty of 360's on Beverly Glen and Sepulveda and there's just no competition... and it cost less than $50,000!
Anyway, nice watch collection, I used to have a Breitling, now I have an IWC Aquatimer 2000, a St Moritz Superstorm, the Suunto, a couple of Polars and my favorite an Oris TT1 Diver's Titan Professional.

That's another name for the E55 AMG which I also own (2004 model). It's a truly excellent car, it's considered one of the best "Super-sedans" in the world... supersedan's are luxury sedans with a super sports car under the hood. BMW has the "M" Class, Audi has the "S" class, for Mercedes it's AMG. To put it in perspective, the Ferrari 360 does 0-62 MPH (0-100 KM) in 4.6 seconds, the E55 AMG (or E550) does 0-62 in 4.5 seconds. The E55 is the baby sister of the Brabus E V12 which is the fastest (top speed) sedan in the world.

Thanks for the advice - the reasons you gave are the reasons I have for holding off. The Porsche Turbo S is another car to think about, certainly.
STIs are killer machines. Even stock they can outrun my Z, as well as most other cars out there.
I love IWC watches, by the way. I'm hoping to pick one up on my first trip to Switzerland someday.

I can't wait for the 2006 STI to come out, it looks really cool (more of a European look) and it has basicly the same specs as the current STI WR1, stock it's supposed to do 0-62 in 4.2! I'm a nut for AWD cars.

here is my story which is based on my job. few years ago, I designed one of speed track in Texas which was for small division. so I spent a lot of time to experience about car stuff. one day, with my design team, I visited Kansas motor Speedway. luckily I had a chance to drive stock NASCAR 10 circles. it had nearly 800 horse power, V8, Monte Carlo. anyway, I was very scary and excited to drive in my life. after finishing 10 circles, staff, who works for speedway, told me that your high speed was 192 m/h. so I was so excited to know that because you don't know how much faster when you drive NASCAR. there is no speed odometer. after that, I and team spent 5 months to complete entire design. I think that it was only project which was related with a car. by the way, I am an architect.

Thanks for letting me know about the merc Verita. Now I might know something when he calls me. I knew that the AMG's were like the M's but I didn't know the 550 was automatically an AMG. I saw one in the traffic the other day .. it was a 500 coupe I think. Is that similar looking? Both windows back & front were down and there was no pillar in the center which I thought looked really good.
We are actually thinking about switching from BMW to Merc because the new 5 series still has not grown on my husband. It was a radical change. I don't mind it in the 7 but not sure about the 5. They are bringing out a newer look so we will see what that is like.

My brother has tons more money than us because he worked hard and sold his business. Now he's moved over to the US to start another business & is doing well. Good on him. I am proud of him. If I were to tell a story then I would surely check my facts on some merc site and claim I have that. I said what he told me quickly he had picked up over there & even said I didn't know what it was exactly but as Verita has clarified is a model of merc that is a good car. I expected him to get a nice car as these are his gadgets.
We have a business ourselves and work very hard and have 2 BMW cars - 1 is a few year old 5 series and 1 new 3 series. Nothing fantastic but still nice... if I want to pretend I would said much better cars than that so go stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Don't call me a liar.

LOL, I love the syntax of the guy's post.
The "500" is just the number designation of the car, so for instance there's an E320, an E500, and an E550 AMG. The "E" designates the model sort of like the 3 Series, 5 Series, etc for BMW. A coupe would be an SL500, aCL500 for example, then there's a few cheaper models, I think the CLK and CL. The SLK and SL are roadsters/coupes, the G and M are SUV's, the C is the compact sedan, and the S is the full size sedan. There migh be a few other models, I mostly know about the E and S classes as I've owned a few over the last 9 years.
Yea, I loved the last 5 Series, the new one's just don't do it for me, I do however think the new 6 Series is awesome. Nice thing about MB is that for xxx dollars you get better performance throughout the models.

I run into this quite often, someone will ask me what car I drive, I tell them about whatever I'm driving that particular day, then they don't believe me out of jealousy. The funny part is if I was goint to lie about the cars that I own (or would like to own) I wouldn't list things like my Audi All-Road Quattro station wagon/suv, I'd go for gusto ( and I think most other people would do the same) and say things like Bentley Arnage T, Porsche Carrera GT, Enzo, and so on. What's even funnier is that I can afford to buy those cars cash-down, but people give me crap about driving my 1977 Toyota FJ-40, or renting a Volvo when I travel somewhere.
Archurban, there are many people who aren't rich who own very nice cars, and there are also very wealthy people who own more average cars, judging someone because of the auto they drive is ridiculous.

I fully agree with you on the reliability and resilience of Toshiba laptops. My dad has a thing about Toshibas and every time he buys a new laptop it's always the newest or highest spec Toshiba. We now have 5 Toshiba laptops - one for each member of the family - right from a crappy Tecra which is like 4 years old, to my dad's 3.2 GHz Satellite P25 and my 2.8 GHz Satellite P10. The only problem we've ever had was a screen issue on one of the old Tecras which required it be sent it for repair. Other than that they've been great. Looks are subjective anyway and mine is one of the newer Satellites, with the cool blue, green and orange status LEDs all over the place :D.

well, my main computer was powermac G4 dual to work with design stuff from company project for last few years with some upgrading process by myself. now, it has been moved to iMac G5. so old one is sort of storage for huge data.

If we're counting cars, I guess my 96 Explorer would fit the description as a gadget. Certainly not the best, but probably the most useful while I am in Northern VA. It's got 155k Miles on it and shows the wear and tear (my dad didn't take the best care of it) and is slow enough to keep me out of trouble (previous car was a Camry which I totalled). It isn't much compared to most of your guys cars, but it gets me from A to B, and while it drinks gas like its cool aid (15-20mpg depending on conditions) I did the math and buying a new car or newer used car doesn't save me any money in the next two years or so and I'm not going to trade an old POS for a small old POS.
My trucks main redeeming factor is a deep personal attachment to it. My family has considered selling many times, and each time backed off finding some excuse not to. You may laugh at being attached to this old hunk, but **** its been in my family for 10 years, I have doubled in age while my family owned the car. Its wierd to think about not having/driving it.
At school though I don't drive all that much and my main toys would be my Ipod Mini and my newly acquired Samsung SGH-P777 which is really cool with 100mb of storage and a slider design.
But the winner is my desktop which is the center of my gadgetry, I used it for school, for games, for talking with friends and the performance for the price I paid can't be beat.

I don't want the 2006, I am not a big fan of how the front end looks. The 2005 on the other hand is a very nice car, it would be amazing to have one of those beauties as my first car. Either the 2005 STI or the 2005 Lancer Evo would be my two favorite options for a car when I get my license. (well, off to search Ebay haha)

iPod 30GB and Panasonic DMC-FZ5 Digital Gamera
I don't really have any others
We have no less than two P4 laptops & a P4 desktop, with a fiber internet connection (wireless in the house). Plus I have a work laptop. :) Its nice to have a computer handy in the living room for surfing. If I'm curious about what's on tonight, or how long a movie is, or when an actress was born, or just want to see the posts on this forum, its all right there.
My best gadget (though its about a dozen parts) is my 51" HDTV with hi-def receiver and a room-shaking stereo (Yamaha receiver, Polk Audio speakers, Panasonic DVD player). Movie theaters always seem kind of quiet to me now. :) I'd like to replace the rear-projection TV with a plasma, but I'm not sure what to do with my 30-pound center channel speaker...and really, the rear-projection looks great except at angles.
My favorite gadgets tend to be the simple stuff, though. A swiss pocket knife is always so handy.
Oh yeah, and we've got the iPods and digital cameras and all that too.

Before you get sold on plasma - take a look at Rear Projection LCD or DLP - they offer an amazing picture at a great price and they're not too huge. My 60" Sony HDTV (rear projection lcd) is only 20" thick at the bottom. Not too shabby.
Flat panel Plasma's and LCD's have their own issues and are great if you need to hang it on the wall, but Rear LCD and DLP sets can display an equal if not better picture than plasma and LCD flat panel sets. And man they are pricey.
Cheers.

Super-thin isn't really a requirement for me. In all the commercials they hang them on the wall like a picture, but I know I have a mess of cables hanging off the back of my TV that will still need to be there.

I never understood the whole 'flat-tv-hung-as-a-picture' thing. Surely the tv needs to be at eye level when you're sat on the sofa instead of some ridiculous neck-straining height?
shabbs
02-04-2006, 08:22 AM
The super-flat-hang-it-on-the-wall thing is good if you have a small room, but you're going to have to run cables in your wall if you want that clean look. If you've got the room, take a look at DLP and RPLCD.

This isn't about class/status/money. I realize some people can't afford gadgets, while other people can get anything they want. I myself am in the middle somewhere. I spend too much money on gadgets, but I enjoy them. To me a gadget is a broad term, and different things I consider gadgets. In some cases, I think some accessories to products can be gadgets, but I have too many accessories of things I own to mention. To me, a gadget isn't something you necessarily need, but it provides a measure of coolness to whatever it's purpose is.
I have an iPod 5G 30gig.
I also have :
Dell Axim X51v (a sweet PDA)
Laser guided slingshot
A Pronto programmable remote for my entertainment system
2.5" pocket color LCD TV
Metal detector
various X10 lighting in the house - timed/remote controlled lights
On an accessory note, the iPod accessories I have that I consider gadgets are:
Griffin Tune Center (on order - April delivery?)
iJet 2way remote with LCD display on the remote to view the song playing/etc (also on order - should be shipped end of month)
PocketDock and Ram Din - the quality of sound from the line out through these items versus the headphone jack makes these more of a necessity to me personally
I know I have more, but that's all I can think of right now.

Oh no, here comes the tech tsunami! :D
We have a collection of iPods (his, hers, ours) to handle the recorded music.
We have 2 XM satellite radio receivers (purchased when they still had world music up on the air) since disconnected.
I'm also an Axim fan, but have my original X5, which does everything I need it to do... including playing video for several years.
More and varied of the smaller varieties... let's not get started on cellphones, unless people want to explain why Acura won't have their hands-free link work with decent bluetooth phones!

What I have now:
-Black 2GB iPod Nano (even though I have about 900 songs, I just keep them all together on my older 15GB 3G) [gift]
-Vaja iVod Nano (very nice case, doesn't compare to a naked iPod though, and I really like some of these foofpods (http://www.foofshop.com/)) [christmas gift]
-Casio Exilim ex-S500, gray [bought it myself]
-Sony PSP [bday gift last year] with some games that I bought/recieved as gifts
-Apple MacBook Pro [this years birthday gift, that was a biggie] with JBL Creature II speakers (which are awesome)
sadly I think i have some kind of disorder where i always want something new, so these are the things i plan on getting in the future:
-Motorola RAZR V3i (any day now... waiting for Cingular to release it which should be this week, if its not then i'll just get the SLVR)
-Xbox 360 (was planning on asking for a PS3... until they released that crazy price... probably a Christmas gift this year)
-Nintendo Wii (it looks really fun, but i'll give it a few test tries and probably wind up buying it for myself)
-iPod 6G (with my Christmas money... yes i have planned that far in advance... i hope its something good and I really dont want one of those touch screen iPods that everyone thinks will be next) and a foofpod case for that (i'm really liking the green jeanie and the green herring ones... i dont know why i love these foof cases so much, if i had any need for a sleeve for my laptop i'd definitely get a foofbag)
sooo yeah thats pretty much it and lets hope i've got all that this time next year...

Ahh, Im the Tech Nerd at my school.
I'm the only kid in Year 10 to have a Decent PDA, and Multiple PCs.
Year 10 makes me 15, nearly 16.
I work for my things, Minus the HP.
My collection, thus far:
iPod 3rd Gen, 15GB.
iPaq rx1950 (Very Nice PDA, for My needs anyway)
Panasonic P342i.
Palm Zire - Sold.
XBOX v1.4 with the Lot, no anchovies.
XBOX v1.3 Freebie, in need of a new Power Supply.
PS2 V4 - Basic
PS2 v4 - Freebie - In need of a new Laser, plays DVDs fine though.
Now Into PCs:
HP Pavilion 544a - Stock Minus DVd Burner and WiFi Card - 256mb Ram (Getting another 512mb on the weekend), 2.2 Ghz, Intel "Extreme" - I use that term loosely - graphics, Onboard ofcourse.
(Biggest Mistake of my Life - Barely Upgradable; Plays Neverwinter Okay, so its good I guess.)
HomeBuilt AMD K-6 500Mhz, Overclocked to 607Mhz. 267mb Ram. My Server Computer. Runs my Network. My younger borhter also uses it for Internet Access and MSN.
Download PC - Compaq PIII - 733Mhz, 256Mb Ram. On all the time, downloading. I love Torrents.
Homebuilt PII - 501MHZ, overclocked to 560Mhz (Yeah, it started Overheating - Shhh), 128MB Ram. Dads Work Computer, Microsoft Word is its main feature. Prints to my Printer.
Work in Progress: Homebuilt P4, Server Case and Mobo. (Scored this one from School, they were throwing out perfectly working stuff that they claimed to be broken, i Scored the PII and the Server MOBO and a 24 Port DLink Hub (Manufactured 5 months Before I got it), thrown out because the School had Upgraded freshly Upgraded Computers and Network Gear, because the updated to Gigabit.
Also, if a Guitar counts as a Gadget, yeah. I have one.
EDIT: Forgot My Network! :O
DLink ADSL Modem, Bridged through my DLink DI-524 WiFi Router. Which provides Internet for my Network PC, Download PC, Work PC and WiFi to My HP. Also to my PDA.
My 24Port hub that I Snagged is in the Roof of my house, which is connected to my Router (as there is not Sufficient ports) and Runs to the Work PC, and through the wall to the Xbox.
And thats all. :)
Can't think of anything else fun.

There's no possible way he bought those things on his own.
Being that I am a BMW freak, I can tell you that the cost of those cars, exluding tax, title, and liscense which adds several thousand dollars, would cost $180,000 to buy. Even if this kid earned $15 an hour and worked 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, from age 10 to 16, which isn't possible if he also goes to school and makes straight As, never mind in huge violation of federal child labor laws, he would make JUST that amount of money. And that's before taxes.
So unless he's getting paid $100 an hour there's no way he could have those cars and everything else, including a rolex costing upwards of $10,000, at that age.
so, conclusion being, this kid is full of it. You notice in another thread he says he has a 745 but doesn't mention any of these cars he supposedly bought. Sounds like someone's a BMW fanboy, but that's all.

Maybe they're R/C cars or models : )
Or, of course, he's one of the new generation of totally spoiled kids. Personally, while I do buy things for my boy that he wants or needs, I also teach him the meaning of the word "No", and I also focus on playing with him and interacting with him.
Or his dad and uncle are crack dealers.
I like tech toys, but I haven't gone overboard.
Four PCs--two hooked up, one that was going to be an MP3 server but didn't happen, one that doesn't work [and that's over six years].
60" WS HDTV
Onkyo HT780 7.1 DD/DTS home theater sound system
PS2, and going old school--Dreamcast, Sega Gen/32x/CD, PS1, all hooked up.
Harmony 676 remote [anyone who has any semblance of a home theatre needs a Harmony]
iPod 5G [just came yesterday]
XM Tao Xm2Go satellite radio, and a does-the-job Roady for in-car use
I have the HDDVR from Time Warner, but since that's 'free', I don't know if it counts.
We've also got lots of random little kitchen gadgets, that have been used once or twice each.

Sony Memory Vault 512mb memory stick
Fuji Fine Pix Z2
Sony PSP
Guess I like look like a bum compared to the 16 year old with an M5...
Too bad that asked about gadgets and not your sound system. In that case I could catalogue every piece of sound equipment/game system/computer system/computer peripherial/home entertainment system/what ever electronic piece I own and have a list longer than a whole page of post on here....but they're not gadgets...
Merriam-webster states that a gadget is: an often small mechanical or electronic device with a practical use but often thought of as a novelty
A 50" high def rear projection TV does not fit the bill...nor any of the other items you posted...
Sorry, I was bored.

A couple os DSs etc, PDA .... just like the others are posting but the best gadget I have is a Gaggia Coffee machine.
It grinds the beans, tamps it down, makes great espresso and then dumps the grounds in a hopper - all automatically. Had it nearly two years x 10 or so cups a day (not all for me :) ) and still runs fine.

Well lets see what I've got:
- Original NES... sort of (I'm missing half the case, but it still works :) )
- Super Nintendo I bought at a garage sale
- N64, got this when I was 6 :) back when I thought StarFox 64 was possibly the hardest thing ever
- GameCube, got it when I was 11 or so, my brother mostly plays with it now
- xBox modded by me with a 60GB drive
- xBox 360, (actually my brothers :p)
- PS2
- PSP, barely use it due to cost of games :(
- Original Gameboy and Gameboy pocket, got both at a garage sale
- Sega GameGear
- Gameboy colour, got it when I was 8 or 9
- Gameboy Advance, got it when I was twelve
- GBA SP, got when I was 13
- Nintendo DS, got when I was 14
- Dell x50v, the thing I use for most entertainment today ;)
- Some old crappy 533Mhz Celeron I use as a File Server
- A Dell 4600, still a pretty decent machine
- Custom built AMD 3000+ PC, decent for playing newer games
- Custom built AMD 3700+ PC with a 7900GT, this is the computer I use for everything
- A 633Mhz celeron sitting in a case I made out of cardboard :o
- Sansa 1GB MP3 player, it's decent...
- iPod 3G 20GB, my dad mostly uses it now :p
- An LCD monitor for the PSOne that I bought for 30 bucks :)
- I guess I could also consider my cat a gadget since he always sleeps on my desk amongst them
... ya I have a lot of gadgets I mostly bought out of impulse when I was younger. I try to be better about buying things these days.

Yeah cept half of them or more aren't really gadgets....
I wouldn't put an N64 on the same level as an iPod or a Blackberry - both gadgets. I'd consider a PSP a gadget, but not an LCD Monitor...a gadget isn't everything that's "techy" you own. I'd revise your list to be like...

Umm... I didn't know I was being rated. And what the do you mean by "look in a dictionary next time", I'm assuming you were refering that I don't understand what a gadget is, according to wiktionary.org the definition of a gadget is:
Noun
gadget (plural gadgets)
1. a w: placeholder name for any device or machine whose name cannot be recalled;
especially
* a clever device designed for a specific practical use:
He bought a neat new gadget for shredding potatoes.
* a complicated or awkward device:
That's quite a lot of gadgets you have collected. Do you use any of them?
I don't understand why you excluded PCs, Pocket PC or the portable LCD monitor from my list, they seem to be devices that are clever and have a specific practical use. If the title of the thread had been "What other PORTABLE gadgets do iPod owners have?", maybe I would have thought otherwise about what I had posted. I would have accepted your thread refering to my list, but with the comment "look in a dictionary next time" it sounded like you were trying to make me sound dumb or something.

08-21-2006, 08:09 AM
Well you didn't specify portable for the PSOne LCD Display...
An LCD monitor for the PSOne that I bought for 30 bucks :)
But I don't think a desktop computer is by any means a gadget...
