I bought a brand new computer, and specifically ordered it with firewire....
....though I found a firewire card in my sock drawer the night it arrived, so I added that card to the machine as well. :D
The new machine also has USB2.0....my old computer had a USB 2.0 card, but it wouldn't recognize it on boot. Had to uninstall and get it to redetect the card every time I rebooted.

i tried the usb+firewire cable and music match didnt pick it up, the iPod only worked as a hard drive. im shure the problem is fixed but firewire is more compatible and also charges your iPod, on the other hand most pcs have only usb. u could plug in to any pc with the usb+firewire cable (only as a hard drive unless there is portible device software installed) I dint know. Your choice. I have both :)

One major advantage of having USB is that nearly every computer has it. About 1/4 of my friend's computers have Firewire, but all of them have USB.
My computer has USB 2.0, but I think I'm just gonna buy a firewire card cuz it works better and charges your iPod. I don't have the iPod yet, hopefully I'll get it around Xmas time. ;)

I'd say get both. Firewire on your main computer where you will sync. And use the USB cable to make your iPod as portable as possible to other PC's. This is especially useful to use the iPod as an external harddrive to transfer files between machines.

the usb cable has a fire wire cable with it to plug into the power adapter so it does charge and sync and i have had no problems with it. plus it can charge when your computers off

You need to modify your poll, because I did:
buy combo USB/Firewire
and buy a cable after since firewire was unstable

I'll use the dock for now, but I will get a USB one ASAP so I can use it like a 20gb PenDrive. Lol, and people tell me that the iPod isn't worth it... riight.

For anyone considering a Firewire/UBS2 combo card may I recommend the Adaptec Duoconnect, I've had no problems with it so far. (But I haven't used both Firewire and USB2 at the same time so that could cause problems.....I remember seeing a post on iPodlounge referring to probs with the Duoconnect when Firewire and USB2 were used at the exact same time.)

I have a 2g ipod so it's a no brainer. firewire is the way I went. although, I already have usb1.1 and a firewire card laying around. the ipod just gave me an excuse to go and install it.

USB 2 because not all PCs have Firewire, and some Firewire cards have serious issues with connecting to iPods, however, Apple's USB 2 cable is V overprices, but i still bought it....go figure

Firewire all the way, I love the feature of it charging while it's connected to my PC, saves alot of hassle.

I use USB. Less hassle than having to buy and install a firewire card.

I bought a firewire card because it was cheaper than buying a USB 2.0 (I have 1.1) and a usb cable.

I'm not sure about using Firewire with my laptop. Will it still charge the iPod while syncing?

Yes it will, but it may use your battery power though. I'd suggest just syncing and then disconnecting and charging in the wall.
