Broken earphone cable

Bought a 3rd gen 20 gb a month ago (just love it) and the earphone cable got loosen. I take care of it, but looks like the (glue?) didn't stay.

Is it covered by the warranty? If yes, would I have to ask to the retailler, of to Apple itself?

They sound so great compared to el cheapo earphones, and I love them in white. Don't want to change them and pay 20$ for a new pair.

Is the earphone fixed to the cable in majority by the surrond plastic, or by the internal cable itself?

Wouldn't the white plastic change color?

I've tried to contact apple via applecare support, but they keep saying my serial number is invalid, but i know it's the good one i've written. Do you have an idea why doesn't it work?
