I did something really stupid. I just got my iPod nano a few weeks ago and have put on quite a few songs in it. After transfering them to the iPod I usually remove them from the hard drive to save space. Today, I tried to transfer the songs back to my laptop. I opened My Computer, clicked on my nano, and found my way to the music folders. They all had 4-letter names and I couldn't tell which songs were which. So I played them on iTunes and changed the file names as I went. Now, the songs won't play on my iPod. I can still see their names on there, but they just won't play. I can go back to My Computer, click on the songs there and it will play on iTunes library, but not directly from my nano. So, please, if someone knows how to reverse this, please help!

Copy all the tracks back to your computer. Re-import them into iTunes, making sure you allow iTunes to "keep your music organised" in preferences. This will rename them on your computer.

You really shouldn't keep your only copy of tracks on your iPod. What if your pod gets distroyed? You'll be knackered. If you are short on HD space then get some more. You are asking for a disaster if you keep sole copies of tracks on you pod.

The iPod changes the names of files and folders to make the DB more efficient.
