Well, considering the forum, I assume you're running Windows :)
So... Might I suggest a little freeware program called CDex. It comes with the LAME encoder and LOTS of tagging options. Automatically grabs cd info off the cddb and let's you format the filename by any available id3 tage field. Sweet little program, I've used it to rip my entire collection (192k / 48khz Rock, pop, etc; 320k / 48khz Classical, Orchestral)

Yes, <but> from the Cdex FAQs:

"The problem is that CDex has not been licensed (anymore) to access the CDDB database of Gracenote since I have refused to sign their license agreement (and I won't sign as it is right now for several reasons). The solution is to use one of the freedb servers, which is free and will be free in the future. "

Is this a problem for non-geek types such as myself?

I am using TagScanner for this...nice to know: it's freeware!

Another nice tool is Tag&Rename: http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm

..but this is a 30days trial version..

The Freedb access is integrated right into the software, so there should be no issues for non-geeks. It's all pretty much seamless.

When you get an iPOD you can use MusicMatch provided or download iTunes. Its as simple as putting the CD in while connected to the internet and it will retrieve the track names then just click burn, and the files are in MP3 or ACC format.

Then the MP3s will either auto-sync when you connect the iPOD or you can drag and drop the MP3s you want on your iPOD, unplug, listen and enjoy.;)
