Hi
I'm a new ipod owner, recently received a 3G ipod as an anniversary gift and had a couple of questions.
What are the best program(s) available to record internet radio?
I found replay radio at : http://www.replay-radio.com/
Replay radio touts itself as: "It's like Tivo for internet radio"
It does have a downloadable demo so I intend to give it a try.
Can anyone suggest other programs especially if there is a freeware solution to this problem. I've been lurking for awhile and have not seen any threads discussing this issue.
3-4 years ago when I had my first experience with a flash based MP3 player (1st version of the Rio) there was a program included that allowed you to copy different radio programs to your player.
My favorite feature of this program was that you did not have to stream the radio program to record it, it would rip the audio program, much like when you rip audio tracks from a CD. so you could record a 1hr. audio programs in a few minutes.
I've googled for a solution but could not find anything like this.
I hope there is an active user base for this type of software on this forum as I would love to be able to start carrying these types of audio programs on my IPOD.
Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

Thanks for your suggestion, after I try them both I'll post a follow up note, I would love to hear from other users with their experiences of what works and what to avoid.

I've been using High Criteria's TOTAL RECORDER for a number of years now. I love it.

One more vote for TR!
The latest incarnation (pro v4.3) automatically splits the streams and names the file for you based upon the display (Artist & Title) from most of the common Internet radio players (MMJB, WinAmp, etc.).
I turn the *radio* on at night using MMJB ArtistMatch, and in the morning I have 150 new songs, with a good start at proper tags... MMJB's *broadcast* quality is quite good. The TR recordings are very clean...

Do you need the standard edition ($11.95) or the Professional Edition ($35) to split the audio feed into files based upon artist and title?

Check out the freeware utility Wiretap (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/freebies/). It records files in .aiff format, which you can then easily convert to smaller MP3 or AAC files using iTunes.

When I found this thread, I immediatly downloaded Total Recorder, but found the steps required to get it to record MP3 a real hassle. I must be doing something wrong! Can any of you who know it well outline the steps to get it recording? It looks like it could be a good solution for me, but I never got there.

I agree. There is not easy indications to how to save or save as MP3 as it always locks you into saving WAV files.

You will need to download an external encoder to get MP3's from TR.
I grabbed a LAME encoder here: http://www.hot.ee/smpman/mp3/
Regardless of where you obtain an mp3 encoding DLL, you must unzip the DLL into the same program library where Total Recorder resides. Then go to "Options>Settings>MP3 Encoding" and select either "Blade Encoder DLL" or "Lame Encoder DLL" as the program for encoding in MP3. The Program Location display should match the directory where you downloaded either the Lame or Blade DLL. You must also change the Recording Source and Parameters to Source > Mpeg Layer 3: Blade Encoder DLL or Mpeg Layer 3 Lame Encoder DLL, as required.

Thanks a Bunch. That worked out perfect. By the way, since I am really new to the IPOD world, what is the easiest way to transfer 200 plus of my audio CDs into the IPOD by not going through too much trouble??

Did all of the above to no avail. When I begin the program I want to record and hit the record button, I get zip. Could this be because I am behind a firewall? I figured if the sound was coming out of my audio card, it would be picked up by the recorder.

Yes, if you can hear the MUSIC, you can record it w/TR.
Check your soundcard settings, "Playback Device" needs to be thru "Total Recorder".
Control Panel>Sound>Audio

Note: "Total Recorder" as the defaut playback device will cause iTunes heartburn (actually Quicktime) in the form of garbled audio.
Just switch this setting back to your "Soundcard" when you are done *recording*.

I finally got it to work, but Media Player choked on the playback settings I had. Once I switched it back to my sound card, Media Player played fine and Total Recorder recorded perfectly. A bit tricky, but doable.

I was wondering if somebody could help me with total recorder. I got total recorder to receive the sound from the online radio, but I can't seem to get it to split. If somebody who's familiar or somewhat an expert on the splitting feature could help me out with my problem, it'd be appreciated. My problem is that I can't get the songs to split. I always get one big file, and not the separate ones I want (separated by song). I have correctly set all the settings. The thing I have noticed is that when I do save the large long music file, it has the name of the radio station, and not the first song on the large music file.
My problem may be confusing, so somebody who uses splitting with total recorder could possibly try my online music radio and see if it works with them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I figured out my problem... or atleast a way around it. I found at the (newest? i think so) version of realone player doesn't work with it, and also windows media player 9, and also itunes radio don't work with total recorder splitting feature.

Latest version of TR will spilt the streams when the player changes its display of "Title-Artist". No more listenening for silent gaps.
However, your internet radio station/player needs to display this info for TR to monitor.

Now that I have TR working, I have two large MP3 files that are both 'recorded' interviews. Both play perfectly in MMJB, but are garbled in iTunes. Can anyone shed any light on this? Conversion to other formats doesn't help, so I'm stumped.

Yes, You can avoid that by changing QuickTime preferences to:
Edit>Preferences>QuickTime Preferences>Sound Out>waveOut: Windows' Preferred Device

So that means I can use TR with iTunes too? I thought it didn't work with it. If it does, that will be sweet. :)

So what is the best player to use with TR that will provide the best quality recordings?

I am using MMJB. I cannot say whether it the BEST or not, but I find the quality to be excellent ("CD" quality setting). Also, unlike other radio services where you can only select genre, MMJB lets you can select individual artists to build artist mixes (ArtistMatch)...this is worth price of admission for me as I can collect streams from artists I know/like...
I paid for a subscription about a year ago...so I''ll keep using until it runs out...
I also use MMJB to assist with TAG lookups...works very well.

Well, after getting TR to record MP3 (using LAME), I found that several sites I want to record from require (ugh!) Real Player. I reluctantly installed it last night and while it would play streaming media fine, I lost all ability to play .WAV files from within Windows. So, I had to check the settings for TR, Quicktime, Control Panel, and God knows what else. I never did get my system sounds back, so I ended up doing a restore point from two days earlier.
Is it just me, or does installing all this stuff create a needless complexity?
