I just got my Ipod for my 18th B-day and now I cant get the thing to work. I have Windows 98 SE which ive seen people say works. My problem is this I run the auto run and I never get to the step where you can find the updater that was posted in the old forum. Anyone have any help here.

First of all, I don't belive you are 18, second of all, iPod does not work on windows 98 well, I suggest you go upgrade to xp

Is lying about being 18 popular nowadays? ;)

Well, it increases your credibility. If he said he's 10 people would just ignore this thread and dismiss it as him being stupid.

or maybe he was just saying he got it for his 18th birthday. No big deal

Why wouldn't he be 18?

Also note how long he waited before posting again.
A whoppin' 20 minutes.

Check the FAQs or search this forum. This question has been answered 1000s of times. In short, iPod doesn't work well with Win98 but there are workarounds.

Of course I love when they say I can't afford XP and they just bought an Ipod.

Dude, you've heard it, but hear it again: Win98 is history. XP is soooo much more multimedia and peripheral friendly, it's not even fair to compare the two. Make the leap and you'll be on your way.

And don't you have any friends w/XP? If you do here is a simple solution:

Have them download and install the 2.1 Updater from Apple. Then search for "Updater.exe" (it will be in C:\program files\iPod\).

Connect your iPod to your friends computer--it will show up in My computer, run the Updater to format the drive to a WiPod.

When that's done, copy the Updater.exe file to your iPod, it doesn't matter where.

Go home. Connect your iPod to your 98SE machine. It will show up in My Computer, copy the "Updater.exe" off of the iPod and onto your PC. Now you'll be able to run this when ever you need to in the future. Like if you have to do a restore.

Next, download MC9, Xplay or Ephpod and start loading.

Oh, and you really should upgrade.

As everyone has said once you move to XP you will never look back.

If you can't do it right away take Adams advice to get the 'Pod working well.

But to be honest you need to start getting a "XP fund" going.

It is well worth the price of upgrade and chances are you won?t see MS's next OS Longhorn until 2005 so you are set for awhile.
You need to turn the page on 98 asap.

Using an IPod with Windows 98SE...

That's like buying a new Ferrari and putting Pep Boys tires on it. It may work...but not to it's full potential.

I can't see the reason anyone would stay with 98, I have a old hp pavilion sitting in the back of my house, I use it to store all my music and *cough* legitimate software. Its a P2 400mhz 192 sdram system and it can run xp pro fine, if you have no money for xp check on ms's website for a key, they will run you about 100 bucks then borrow your friends cd.
