to have my entire music collection (some 200 + CDs, over 2100 songs) at my fingertips in my car! That alone makes every penny I've spent thus far worth it. If someone had told me I could do this 6 months ago, I'd have laughed and shook my head.

I love looking at my gigantic CD folder next to my tiny iPod....seems unreal that all those CDs are on that tiny little thing.

Well, armless, I don't know about it being the 'greatest thing ever', but it sure as h*ll beats lugging around a bunch of CDs. The idea of having to get in my car, drive 15 mi. to Wherehouse (the closest music store to where I live), hunt for the disc I hope is in stock, stand in line while I wait my turn and then for my debit card to transact, spend 10 min. unwrapping the dumb thing, and shoving it in my car stereo seems, at this point, a bit like using a typewriter to write a letter. Welcome to the digital age!

It's funny how society has gone from:
Records to
8-Tracks to
Cassettes to
CDs to
Hard Drives...
Portability is a wonderful thing. :D

Question is what will it be next...?
hard drives will no doubt get smaller, but soon we'll either be wearing it or it will be part of us - 100Gb chip implanted somewhere on your body LOL :D

Next? Flash memory in the multi-gigabyte range that is affordable. Faster, less fragile, & cheaper (eventually). And, as battery technology improves, portablilty becomes less of an issue.

As we start making these smaller and smaller its gong to make it more likely that we lose the #### things ;)

LOL...Yeah, think about it. If people can lose bigger things (I've lost 3 gameboys...LOL), what of the iPod?
*starts praying not to lose iPod*

i dont think that the size of something really has much to do with how much you lose it. I have never once lost the 4 most important and used things that i own:
1. ipod
2. car keys
3. sensa pen
4. cell phone
as long as you cherish it, paid a lot of $$ for it and need it...trust me, you won't lose it

Deft is right, I've been using mobile phones for over 3 years and have never lost or mislaid one.

Eh, Remember live music?...
The old 78's were supposed to be the death of live music. Maybe freely exchanged digital music will cause musicians to be rewarded for live performances instead of just being fodder for production and distribution companies. Musicians playing to a live audiance???

It would be cool to go to a live show and in the back of the room where the usually sell cds you could just plug in your iPod and buy some of the band's music.
The band could charge like $5 or so, since there's no cost of producing cd's.
in about 2 yrs there will be talk of digital music stations in the mall and various other places where you can just go up plug in your mp3 player and put in liike 20 bucks and download 2 cds

That transfer of digital songs is such an awesome idea! You just go along, plug in your player9iPod if you're cool) and then you pay the man/woman..and walk away...
Then there would be no cloud of doubt over how companies are able to charge us all this money, they could not put it down to cd,case OR blurb in case..
The companies would be naked and exposed for the scandalous prices they are essentially charging for just MUSIC.. people would be saying..wait why am i pay ?15 for just 15 songs?!
