Is there a product, like the flexible dock, that includes a wireless remote to control the iPod? They release remotes with head units to control your radio, why not release a charger/cradle with one to control the iPod? I'd find it pretty useful.

One other option - get a home-stereo type dock with a remote (Kensington, many others make for under $50) and use that.
