Hi,
I have a 40gb I-Pod Photo and seem to have had nothing but problems with it. My girlfriend bought me the unit for my birthday (December 2004) but unfortunately, around about March, I dropped it on a concrete floor and it failed to work anymore. I contacted Apple and was instructed to send the unit to them and they would replace it as it was under warranty. I did this and received what I thought was a 'new' unit. However, the unit they sent me as a replacement as NEVER yet worked properly.
This unit began by refusing certain songs. It would allow around about 11gb of music on and then refuse anything more. ITunes would state that the music was on the IPod, but the music wasn't there. After many attempts at restores, updates and resets, this problem was occurring at different intervals. I got back in touch with Apple, sent the unit back and received exactly the same unit back - simply restored to its factory settings. This model has now been back to their repair service at least 7 times within a year and I still have a faulty unit. I rang them up and got no sense. I included a letter with the unit and illustrated within the 500 word limits that the unit was obviously faulty but they simply kept on sending the same unit - RESTORED.
For the past couple of months the unit has been working half-heartedly but at least I could listen to some music. However, in mid January it froze again (typically, right at the start of a 22-26 hour coach journey  ). When I got back home it simple began working again. Just like that! Was working fine until last week when it seemed to completely die. Once again, it froze during play. I began getting the exclamation point folder and then the unhappy IPod logo. I tried many of the techniques in the FAQ's but had no luck. It now either simply does not turn on at all, or manages to get to a screen which has an almost empty battery with lightning going through it. Also, if I put the unit to my ear, I can hear the HD making a whirring noise, as if it is struggling to boot into action.
I have just finished looking on the Apple site to find that my warranty has ran out and that it will cost me £166 to repair the unit. This is an absolute DISGRACE, especially when my unit has spent more time in their hands than in my own. Does anyone have any advice at all on what I may be able to do. Is there an e-mail addy I can contact them with some sense as I cant seem to find one?
Any advice on what options I may have, or any possible steps on manually fixing the unit would be greatly welcomed. Sorry for the long-winded e-mail folks but I felt I needed to make it clear the level to how much I have been messed around by Apple.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers
