i know alot of people have had this problem

i just got a G4 40gig ipod basicly for free. but when i charged it the apple logo will come up followed by the folder icon with the ! on it. the ipod is also making a strange clicking noise when the disk trys to start. then the disk stops then trys to start exe...

i downloaded the updater and tryed to restore it but the computer wont recognize the ipod. and when it does i click restore and it says can't mount ipod.
this is on a PC
but i also have a ibook (getting it back today) does anyone know if it will work on a ibook better than on a pc?

and if not what can i do to fix it?
i have alredy tryed disk mode and restarting it like 100 times.

thanks

My 4G had the same symptoms, and after much messing around I eventually sent it back to Apple for a refund. IMO you can't go anywhere from where you are now. There is probably a reason you got it for free.

You might be able to get Windows to reformat the hard drive, if you can get it recognized as a storeage device. You've got nothing to lose by trying, eh? If you can get Windows to mount the iPod, right-click on the device in "My Computer" and click on Format. Use FAT32 as your File System and do NOT use the "Quick Format" option if it's presented as an option.

If that goes well, try running the iPod Updater, do a Restore, and hope for the best. I'd put your chances of success, at best, at 50/50. Still, nothing to lose, right?

i would send it back but they wouldnt give me a refund..
also.
now the computer doesnt even recognize it at all. before it would for a few seconds
now it doesnt at al
its pretty lame.

is there anyway to completely restore it without doing it through the computer?

now it says do not disconnect but after a few seconds it restarts. then does the same thing over again, always restarting..

anyone have any ideas?

please.

Well I hope someone responds about this, because I'm having the same rebooting issue. I'd like to know how/where to get mine fixed if that's what I have to do...
