View Full Version : tired of ipodlinux screwing up my nano

I soon to realize that putting ipod linux on my nano really screws things up.
#1 I had this problem of using it and then suddenly my mp3s wouldn't play. I checked my filenames on my ipod and they were all named weird characters like %$%#^%#^$. My mp3s became corrupted and had to format.
#2 After formatting, I put ipodlinux on there again and worked for a good 2 weeks until one day, it seemed like the ipod resetted and all my songs were gone. I tried to go into my music folder through my computer to check whats wrong, but wasn't able to access the folder cause it asked me to format.
#3 After formatting again, I installed ipodlinux again and my nano started screwing up with the playing of my songs. It would constantly freeze up at 0:00 and I must reset. This happen couple times.
#4 Same exact thing with #2 where my songs suddenly erase and I need to format.
That was the last straw and I'm not gonna deal with ipodlinux anymore until I for sure know it creates no problems. I'm not sure if anyone else has similar problems to mine, but I believe the linux is causing all this. I never had these problems before I installed it. I use the newest applie firmware update, but I must admit, I do a lot of exercising and the nano shakes a lot when I'm listening to it at the gym. I still feel its the ipod linux.

Podzilla is not stable on Nanos, below is a quote from the main page:
"iPodLinux is currently safe to install on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods. Development is currently on-going on later generations of iPod, including the fourth generation click wheel, mini, U2, Photo/Color, Nano, and Video."
So basically you are beta testing this software if you install it on anything other than 1-3G iPods. Perhaps you should post your comments at: http://ipodlinux.org/ so that the developers can learn from your pain.

The nano uses flash memory so you can shake it all you want its not going to do anything.

hi.
did you deactivate deep sleep mode after installing ipodlinux on your nano?
deep sleep can cause exactly the kind of problems you described.
your nano goes into deep sleep after 12 hours of inactivity or so...
you can disable it with a program called ipodwizard.
give ipodlinux another try with deactivated sleep mode...unless you've already tried that.

i try not to play the music with the podzilla, because when playing a song, you cant go through the menu of songs without the song currently playing stoping. i just go in there for doom or vid clips. i use the standard apple firmware for music.
i havent had those problems yet? are you using itunes to load your songs on there?

I dont know if this matters or not but the 1-3G it is deep sleep on the nano and video it is hibernate. Deep sleep occurs after 36 hours of inactivity. Hibernate is after 12 hours.

Tell me more about this deep sleep. Sometimes I do listen to my ipod at night in my bed and fall asleep with it on. What is this ipodwizard and you're saying that my symptoms is the cause of going on deep sleep? It's possible that my symptoms could be from deep sleep, but I'm not sure how. Kindof scared to do it from all the other various bugs that ipodlinux has given me.
edit: from reading, nano doesn't go on sleep mode and only hibernates. Are you talking bout hibernation? I checked my nano settings and sleep was always turned off in main menu settings. Not sure if you are talking bout this either.

deep sleep essentially shuts the iPod off completely. much like turning off your computer, when you reboot your computer you have to wait for the OS to load. same thing with the iPod, the software needs to essentially boot up. when you turn your iPod back on after 36 hours of inactivity you will see a Silver Apple icon on a black background for a few seconds and then be taken to the main menu screen of the Apple firmware.
