Wow that was really enlightening Clark.

I don't think there's an official time (even though office workers might consider the magic 5pm to be it).

Is this like the proverbial "If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody's around" kinda question?

I'm going with 6pm by clocks, and sundown for the naturalists...........

I usually start saying 'good evening' after 5. No idea why :P

I'd say around 5ish but I just say good evening when the sun goes down. Anywhere from 4 pm in the winter to 9:30ish in the ummer

Afternoon definitely after lunch until the sun starts to set. Once it's getting dark, it's evening. That's how I work it anyway.

I couldn't say good evening to someone at 5pm when it's still light. I would say good afternoon, then 'now go away I'm going to cook dinner'. ;)

i think evening starts as soon as you've had your first martini, gin & tonic, scotch on the rocks, etc.....! ;)

though not all of them together........!!

Possibly a great night as well, but a difficult morning. AHEM! ;)

Yeah I just remembered why I don't drink very often anymore. ;)

Evening begins when I've made the last call of the day, switched playlist to "Ride Home Music" and started to decompress.

The martini is a good indicator too, but I prefer bourbon, straight up, on my patio with my dog and a smokin' grill.

Afternoon: Any time after the sun has reached it's zenith.

(Traditionally) Twilight: When the sun has begun to slip below the horizon, but shadows are still visible. (Rarely used and has been replaced in the common vernacular with "evening".)

(Traditionally) Evening: Once the sun has descended below the horizon, but there is still visible sunlight.

Night: No visible sunlight.

I've always thought of 1900 as the start of the evening. I don't know why though, I guess I just think of 1800 as still early.

Evening is any time after dinner (or whenever dinner starts) which for me is about 4, so i Guess that's the magic number.

I used to be a tree. And no, we don't make a sound when we fall. That was back in 1926, before I was chopped down and reincarnated as Anne Frank.
