when connected via firewire my 3G 20GB iPod behaves just like a regular drive. ie. I can see it in disk manager, and therefore able (if i want) to format it, defragment it, etc.
has anyone used disk manager to defrag their ipod? has anyone used disk manager to format their ipod dive?
I was wondering the other day if i formatted using disk manager, and then tried to do a restore with the ipod software, if it would work.
I know, there is no point. =) i really dont plan on doing it, but it has me curious. like if i wanted to use the ipod as a drive for a while, then go back to using it as an ipod.

Yes, folks have done it. There's no problem doing it. No need to since the Updater does a format when it restores it.

Apple doesn't recommend defragging the iPod. Personally, I just do a restore every month or two. This has a couple of benefits: it defrags and cleans up the drive nicely (as everything is wiped off of it) and it gives you a clean iPod Database which can at times get corrupted.
