Got an interesting case for everyone... Please let me know if anyone else is having these issues!

Had one of the JUST RELEASED Alpine 9856 head units installed in my 2001 VW GTI over the weekend. It is a beautiful unit and produces GREAT sound... one small issue though... My 3G iPod has "issues" communicating with the new Alpine 9856 head unit.

For those that haven't heard Alpine introduce a new feature called the "full speed" iPod connection. It allows the iPod to DIRECTLY connect to the head unit without ANY kind of converter box. You can then browse your entire iPod collection from the normal controls (with great performance) while your iPod is charged safely locked away in the glovebox, or whereever...

The minimun requirements for the Alpine 9856 with the iPod cable is to be a 3G iPod with F/W version 2.3. I meet these requirements with my 3G 20G iPod.

Get this though... when you press the effective "menu" key to browse the iPod for playlists, artists, etc, the head unit does NOTHING. You can play songs (starting with the first song in the iPod OR the last playing song) but you can't browse... What makes this weirder is that later generation iPods work perfectly. I even had the head unit and cable replaced by the pro shop who performed the installation... and the issue was not resolved.

What is even more strange is that SOMETIMES it does work, but then at other times it ceases to allow browsing... ALL VERY STRANGE.

We called Alpine tech support and they asked if we had 1) restarted the iPod (duh) and 2) checked the software version (duh) or 3) tried to re-flash the iPod (yep, that too.... duh!). Nothings seems to crack the nut...

Anybody else see these issues??? Any suggestions??

Thanks,
Tdub
