I'm about to go on a bit of an extended holiday and I want to take a digital camera with me. I've also got an original shaped 20Gig Ipod, is there anyway that I can transfer the photos I take onto the free space on my ipod for storage rather than buying lots of memory sticks?

The new card reader for the 3Gs won't work. I can't think of any other way that doesn't involve transferring to a computer first...
You could sell your iPod for one of these:

More storage and it has a speaker as well as headphone jack.
