I wrote up a little document on how I opened and hacked my iCarPlay. iPod FM transmitters all seem to have the same two problems: 1) they don't put out enough RF to reliably quiet the radio and 2) when they do, the audio is so low you have to turn the radio up a LOT and the resulting increased background noise ruins much of the joy.
My hack fixes both of these problems by adding an external antenna (as you've seen in many of the iTrip hacks) and also modifying the audio input circuitry.
I documented what I did in a 180k pdf file. I can't u/l the file here because it only allows jpg and gif formats. If anyone is interested, please PM me with your email address and I'll email it to you. It may not follow good forum etiquette, but you can also find the document in the "Hacks" forum at ipodwizard.net.
