Can you hear your iPod?

I used to not be able to hear my iPod (i.e., when calling up songs or updating), now I can. It's a low whining that only lasts as long as the hard drive is in use. I have had my iPod less than 2 months.

I recall noticing that it made a sound when I first got my iPod, but hadn't really noticed it again until recently. Wondering where everyone else stands on being able to noticeably hear their iPods, which is to say that you aren't trying to listen for it; it just stands out.
